Well, the Trophy is currently on holiday at JMS, so thought I’d look through some pictures …. already posted these in the track day thread a few weeks back, but meh:

Looking sl*gishly good as usual!

Any more plans for it?

Not really, just a shed load of maintenance work really, currently in for cambelt/aux belt/de-phaser, & potentially new PAS pump/alternator as one of them most definitely died at Donington. It's all in James'/Tom's capable hands at the mo ...

Getting the aircon delete kit fitted as well, it hasnt blown cold since i bought it anyway, & theoretically it may add a little power/reviness to the engine. I guess it'll also be nice having something shiny on the car, certainly wont be the paint anytime soon ;)

Then maybe some Koni adjustable rear dampers & de-pin the fronts so i can mess about with the suspension a little more. With the addition of R888's for my next track outing, it will be nice to have a little additional stiffness at the rear i think.

Re: Project 172k Trophy, & its endless track abuse

Little update as the car has now been on holiday for a week.

Not because JMS are slow i might add, but because i told them to take their time, im in no rush to get it back. Purely as it only sits on the drive gathering dust till the next trackday

Work completed so far:

  • Compression Test - all fine, was pretty good across all cylinders apparently.
  • Cambelt & Aux Belt change - had done 4 yrs/100k since the last one
  • De-phaser Pulley - had finally started to rattle a bit after 174k
  • Rocker Cover Reseal - was leaking, literally everywhere, i used a 5L can as top up.
  • Pure Motorsport aircon delete - didnt work anyway, less weight, faster pickup?
  • Coolant change & thermostat - again, had done 4 yrs/100k since last change
  • New NGK PFR6E10’s - by the look of them, they had done 174k & were causing a misfire at 1.8k rpm. My solution was to simply keep it above that. James said i was a bad man.
  • JMS Remap - already had RS inlets, so it seemed rude not to really, obviously wont be getting the ktec one now, so will see if someone else can take my place ...

Cant wait to get it back & take it for a drive, should feel noticeably different compared to before :D

Have decided that i'm going to clean it as well. Its rank atm.

This car makes me feel so much better, about the mileage on mine.

I thought my sparkies were knackered, and James said they were the worst he's seen as they had done 72k, but yours.......man im suprised you didn't need 1.21 gigawatts to make those buggers spark!

And i guess when you say 'I' that means 'Ollie will be cleaning it once I've picked it up from JMS' ;)

Sounds entertaining Dave, have you noticed much of a drop at the front with the sportlines fitted?

Not especially, maybe 5mm max. with about 10mm at the rear. Then i pulled the interior out, which raised it back up again ... needs coilovers for looks and if/when i strip it completely. Unless you/Fred ae working on something else ...

Nice work Dave that sounds like a pretty penny will have been spent with the lads at Jms. When I take mine down for some work I will give you a heads up and meet up at the garage for a bit of trofail chat ;)

Let me know how it feels with the aircon removed.

Of course he won't. He'll just keep driving it looking like a ditch with trophy stickers on until I get so annoyed that I'll attack with a Karcher. It's his usual ploy.

Good choice on the remap better than messing about going down to Ktec, I was really pleased with my JMS remap :)

Re: Project 172k Trophy, & its endless track abuse

I though that on this note, i should make a rather large update :D

Firstly, thanks to James & Tom at JMS, despite having to be on the Eurotunnel at 6am this morning, James was bleeding my brakes at midnight last night - mostly thanks to Boosh bringing in a last minute brake related emergency/f*ck up i might add ... IR tired.

So, as mentioned previously i was having the following done:

•Compression Test - all fine, was pretty good across all cylinders apparently.
•Cambelt & Aux Belt change - had done 4 yrs/100k since the last one
•De-phaser Pulley - had finally started to rattle a bit after 174k
•Rocker Cover Reseal - was leaking, literally everywhere, i used a 5L can as top up.
•Pure Motorsport aircon delete - didnt work anyway, less weight, faster pickup?
•Coolant change & thermostat - again, had done 4 yrs/100k since last change
•New NGK PFR6E10’s - by the look of them, they had done 174k & were causing a misfire at 1.8k rpm. My solution was to simply keep it above that. James said i was a bad man.
•JMS Remap - already had RS inlets, so it seemed rude not to really, & i had already decided against the other, free option
•Bleed brakes - they've not been right since Donington
•Gearbox Oil change - probably never been done

In addition, to cure the whirring noise a new valeo alternator was fitted (exchange from GSF as the Renault item is now £400 lol), along with a new PAS pump - its been struggling occasionally of late, ie getting pretty heavy sporadically, so thought i might as well get that changed at the same time.

My thoughts? Its like a new car, obviously the whirring is no more, it idles perfectly & i dont need arms like Arnie to turn the wheel. Most importantly, the engine, oh the engine. No more hesitancy below 2k (from f*cked spark plugs), sounds wonderfully smooth (rattly de-phaser is gone) & it pulls like the proverbial train (partly due to a new Pipercross filter i guess, instead of an ITG that looked like it had been dragged through a lake. Obviously its been remapped, but having had a mapped clio before, id put the overall improvement down to a combination of the work done, along with the pièce de résistance, the Pure Motorsport Aircon Delete Kit ...

Not only does it add that little bit of shinyness to an otherwise average engine bay, but yes, it does make a really noticeable difference to the way the car drives. Obviously with all the other work that i've had done to the car, it would be silly to talk about power & speed, etc. But wat is noticeable is the improved eagerness to rev & lower inertia of the engine, a blip of the throttle really is a blip now, with it swinging round with an almost 'vtec' like quality.

James said that i would realy notice it the 1st time i heeled & toed, & i did when the revs jumped about 1.5k more than they usually would on a typical 4th to 3rd downshift!

So, in effect, i've had a lot of work done, spent a lot of money & ended up completely falling in love with my car again. Thanks guys.

And now, some pics :approve:

Oh, massively chuffed!! Havet driven it in anger for over a month either, & being used to the 320d, it felt flipping amazing to be back in it. Has cost me a small fortune this month though. Cheap Trophy = not cheap Trophy anymore lol.

Oh, you'll love getting back in it, and after all thework you've had done, you too will definately see an improvement in the power/delivery!! Like a new car, amazing considering the miles she's done now ... and yes, after all this love, my intention is now to clean it.

A JMS Last minute.com evening was had by all, but as ever, all came good. Personally i blame it all on Luke and his DIY mechanical fail. ;)

Im interested to know how the hell Tom got on this morning. Driving to the Alps with pretty much zero car prep, no idea where his passport was, and a distict lack of warm (and clean) clothes.
