I had the same problem in my 172 from 35000 miles, although i used the aircon daily, the damp smell was noticable... So I bought one of those Comma air con spray cans from Halfords and followed the instructions and the smell went away :-)

I think it is something to do with the damp being held in the air con matrix inside of the airvents.. When you dont have the aircon on or it is raining the windows mist up...I found a way around this to stop it and that is every so often, just drive with the windows open and the heater on hot...

UKASKEW I am not knocking 172/182s but the day of the Chav will be the downfall of this fine motor...they can always insure with £500 excesses and third party, fire and theft only..etc

Does nobody have the worry about the 172 (Mk1/2), 172cup, 182, 182cup, Trophy all falling in the hands of chavs and destroying the brand similar to what happened to the Saxo....I mean this in terms of when the cars are 2 - 3 years old and cheap as chips only to be bastardised with tints, big...

i should say really, the bit about the calibra...any car can be tuned to be faster.....cars should be bought to be enjoyed...i am very happy with my 172...and no it isnt tuned and that doesnt bother me either.

Would a cup (standard 172/182) beat a Astra VXR with Lotus suspension....the answer would be no.....would a cup (tuned) beat an Astra VXR no it may keep up but not overtake...the Astra would have lower down torque and just too much more brake horsepower...but then there is a road legal Calibra...

I have tried Contis on my 172 and Pirelli Pzeros they were all fine. But I now have Vresdestein Sportrac 2s on the front only and they are phenominal...I know they dont have the hardened tyre walls of the PE2s but they are amazing tyres in the wet and dry and heavy rain i would of been lifting...

Actually later on in the year i intend to put an order in with the Dealer for a Vauxhall Astra VXR !!! :D

I had my aircon on today, on the coldest setting, fans on near full and recirculating button on....it was fr fr freezing but fantastic for ordering two McFlurries from Mcdonalds... Got home with then 10 mins later and they had hardly melted :) Hot days with aircon is delightful !!!

I have a flash gun for my 172 and use it on my girlfriends car.. It is indeed very good, washing it with the water jet...lash on plenty of foam on setting two and sponge in with a wet wash mitt....blast off with the cold water, make sure you get the shampoo on everywhere else it does bead off...

My 172 was twitchy in the wet....it is sure footed now with Vrdestein Sportrac 2s as best in group test rated by Autoexpress for dry and wet driving with 3 stars for snow driving too...they are made of silica rubber... They are £46 fitted, ive tried lots of other tyres and these have limpet...
