Hi Tony, any chance you could take a photo or two of the inside of your hatch since cutting back please. I fitted the Aerocatches yesterday and couldn't decide where or how much of the inner skin to remove. In the end I actually decided it wasn't worth it but would be interested to see how...
I recently stripped my dashboard and engine looms back on my track 172 (removed heater, fan unit, stereo, original seats, air-bags etc etc), I disconnected everything and brought the looms inside and laid them out on the lounge floor, really took my time and made sure everything still had earths...
I think you said the other day it was going to be a boy therefore baby blue would be a good colour for the wishbones & beam on the basis that you may have some paint left over and you'll be able to do the window-sill & door, Bonza!
Since 'The Wheel Specialist' closed down I've been going to 'Paint-It' in Billericay, have had two sets done there and they always do a 100% perfect job, would definitely recommend them to anyone else.
Good to hear Kelv, it will feel like a new car after that lot! Baby blue would look ace with the red. Listen to us we're like automotive interior-designers.
Ha ha, welcome to the world of Space Cadet!! God know how I hold this job down?! Very sad I know, but I even Googled "what colours go with red?" Silver obviously goes well but would look too OEM, it needs to be something contrasting and why not have a bit of fun as the powder/paint wont cost...
I spoke at length with Nick at Pure before deciding on the rear strengthening kit, he advised he thought it would give the equivalent of the Whiteline set at 3/4 's. You definitely wouldn't therefore then want to have both fitted!! Definitely have all done at the same time - the wishbones will...
Hey Kelv, great modification to make, really sharpens up the rear, don’t know if you're running one already but you wont want an additional ARB once you fitted the Pure bits. Also if you're running coil-overs you can cut the old spring platforms off. Obviously you know you cant powder-coat or...
Right, the bolts I already have are 10.9, but none of this matters now anyway as I've just ordered some lovely blue Pro-Bolt aluminum bolts - so if they fail and I crash I've only got my vanity to blame. Don't whatever you do look at the Pro-Bolt site though because you'll end up spending far...
Thanks James, I cant view the link at work but a quick Google search informed that 10.9 is as hard as they get so probably unlikely they're aluminium. I'll have a look at what rating the bolts I already have are and report back later/tomorrow.
Hey James. Ha ha ORANGE!! - I was just going to go for blue as that's the interior scheme - orange is reserved for the chassis! Did you order them in aluminium or go for something stronger?
Thanks Fred. The 8.8 that Jaff was referring to may be the number appearing on the original bolts, I wont be able to confirm until I get home tonight. My original question is whether I can replace these with some Pro-Bolt aluminium bolts, or whether they would have to be stronger and made of...
Thanks. I'm not great with stresses - I'd presume that the bolts would only be subjected to a 'sideways' cutting stress when turning the wheel as opposed a 'pulling' stress from being stretched say like the head bolts in the engine. I could be talking complete rubbish of course.
Thanks, I'll check the number tonight. I think they originally came with an OMP wheel, which I've changed since and now also fitted a QR Boss so they've been 'used' quite a few times.
There are 6 (I think without checking) little countersunk Allen bolts which fix my steering wheel to the QR boss, partially because I've rounded one of the bolts and partially because I fancy adding a bit of colour, could I swap these bolts for some good quality Pro-Bolt anodised aluminium...
Fixing something that is broken or worn out! There is always something that can be tweaked, replaced or upgraded. (I've had my 172 for about 3 years now and have spent probably £35k on it and literally hundreds of hours working on it and there are ALWAYS a few little (or big!) jobs that need...
Thanks. Looks good by the way. Ok, food for thought then. Think it might end up being one of those jobs I wish I hadn't started if I attempt to get the old crackle paint off. Presumably you left the sparkplugs in and just painted down into the 'tubes' a bit?
Thanks. That's actually the problem, I paid for it to be cleaned and sprayed with crackle paint when I had the cams done, but the crackle finish isn't great (no reflection on the guys who did it, I just think it’s the paint). I wish I'd just asked for normal enamel or similar. What paint did...
If you are serious enough to fit a cage then fit a 6-point harness, feels so much secure and actually fits better around your waist and stomach as the crotch strap stops the lap straps riding up.
