If you currently have 225s on a 7J rim then 205s will fit yea

There is supposed to be some gap between turret top and the top cup nut. And the rubber mount should fill up the entire inside of the strut ouwer, thats its job.

sounds like the belt slipping over the pump pulley. You can check if you get a mate to turn the wheel while you watch the pump/belt.
