    Renaultsport Spider

Kind of meant to be the French Elise, with two seats and an aluminium chassis. But it weighs 935kg as opposed to the Elises 760kg. Powered by the F7R Willy/Megane 2.0 engine; good for 150bhp and a power-to-weight close to the Elise in theory. No roof though! Crap sales in UK - not even a...

    Plasitc Bump Strips

We tried to put Phase2 bump strips (from a normal 3-door) on my mates Phase1 16v a while ago. They wouldnt fit The 16v doesnt have a shorter wheelbase, but the rear arches are flared and the bump strips are about an inch shorter. So any 16v rear arch bump strips are only going to fit a 16v.

    Not so fast 172

I reckon they might be slightly more desireable amongst enthusiasts as time goes on, as they are rarer and have a reputation for being a smidge quicker. Put it this way, Id prefer one - but were the enthusiasts and I dont think the Phase1 172s will be more expensive on the open market in years...

    Not so fast 172

0-60 times can hide a lot of other importnant info! Many fast cars "hide" in the 8-9secs 0-60 figure league. The 0-60 of the Willy and 16v are identical at 7.7 by the book, while the Willy is quicker to 62mph. Thats becuase the 16v can just make 60 in 2nd, whereas the Willy has to change to...

    Brake disk bolts snapped

This happened to me and Ive been reassured that it happens to 80% of cars as those little bolts just get frozen in. Make sure that theres still some of the bolt still sticking proud of the hub and use it as a guide for the disc - the wheel and its bolts will hold it in no problems. Be careful...

    1.8 head on 2.0 block

The 1.8 head will fit straight on the 2.0 block. The only difference is 30mm somethings on the 1.8 head and 32mm somethings on the 2.0 head (inlet valves? injectors? - cant remember!). Anyway, most people use the 1.8 head and exhaust manifold.

    DEAD CAR

This whole lowering at ABP sounds suspect to me, although - with the greatest respect to Adi - I would like to ask how low the back was? I found with my old Mk1 1.2 Clio (which was lowered to the floor at the back) that the handling was really dodgy mid-bend when the shocks became loaded up...

    JACKING POINT FAILURE

I do a lot of my own work on my car, so I jack it up a lot. I binned the original jack in favour of a hydraulic one - much easier. You dont have to use one that catches the little holes on the sills, but there are only four "official" jacking points (just behind the holes). If you feel...

    DEAD CAR

Sorry to hear that. If its any consolation, remember that youve still got the best bits intact - engine, leather etc. Lets hope you can find another Valver to stick them in.:D

    mk1 1.4RT ratios

The box in my old 1.2 was well dodgy and I had no rev counter - just the limiter to tell me when to stop revving! The speedo used to wave around massively, so I had to take the average wobble as the speed reading! Hurting your RSi at 6300rpm? My Valver would still be waiting for it all to...

    Quick info needed.....

If you have the front lower than the back, the car will steer progressively on the limit and you will tend to have more grip on the front wheels (which you can best control). Lowering the back more is a on-way ticket to understeer city! I had my 1.2 lowered to the floor at the back and it...

    Gearbox problems-HELP

Renault mainly do recond boxes for the 16v - my mate had one 20k miles ago and now its whining! (could be an auxillary part I guess).

    mk1 1.4RT ratios

I think that the Mk1 RT is a very good little hatch considering it was never designed to be overtly sporting. Goes to show what a good starting point the Mk1 Clio chassis is. My old 1.2 wasnt fast by any standards, although it would always beat any other 1.2 of the era! I found that 4th...

Im new, got a Q bout the billabong

    I think the 1.2 16v makes 75bhp and does 0-60 in about 12.5 secs.

    Alarm problem

My META M99/36T system has given up the ghost. I dont know exactly why, but just want to throw a few questions: 1. How can I tell if its because the fobs need re-coding? 2. Would a system like this use the original Renault alarm infa-red sensor? If so, how can I tell if its broken? Im...

    can anything else go wrong

I think you have to get on top of problems with a Mk1 Clio, or itll bite your bum and your wallet later (especially with the 16v/Willy). But as enthusiasts and (maybe) amateur mechanics, were probably sensitive to the things most drivers never notice and let their garage fix once a year.

    Diesel performance

I think that normally aspirated diesels dont have much going for them in the "sporty" sense. But the market seems to have woken up to forced induction diesels in a big way recently. Though this may be helped a lot by new company car tax regulations, it also owes something to the fact that...

    Price for de-cat back

K-tec do a silenced de-cat at about £60 plus VAT. I doubt that you could get an aftermarket system that would exclude the back box, but a local specialist (such as Longlife in Cardiff/Bristol) would help you out. Id go for a full cat-back system and hang onto the original system for...

    Couple of 16v questions

Interestingly, in answer to my question of why my bearings would go so soon, my Renault specialist said that 90% of bearings were not fitted correctly with a press. Banging them in may have the desired effect in the short term, but they soon degrade as a result of the banging force. Ill see...

    Gearbox problems-HELP

Since the gbox is coming off anyway, it can easily be opened up, cleaned and inspected for anything untoward. Gboxes arent disposable IMO, they can usually be patched up providing the expetise/parts are available.

Just wanted to add that Im not slating really moded cars before anyone gets that idea - just his choice of base car! Still...I agree with the 220bhp NA idea.

Why is it that Luxobarges get annoyed

ICEman - it was ok as i wasnt holding him up. It opened up to a two lane road very shortly afterwards and he didnt overtake - he just sat on my rear bumper.

220 bhp NA Rover 200 Coupe!!

Visited my mate at work in Halfords yesterday and checked up on his progress with his Rover 216 Coupe. The last time I saw him six months ago, the car was at a garage having a 2.2 lite VTEC engine from a Honda Prelude put in it! Anyway, they eventually gave up, so he took it to another...

    5GTT !!!

Ive just been down to the local Renault specialist that Ive been using for a few years - and we were chatting about a Phase1 GT Turbo he used to have. It made about 210bhp and mods included a turbo and many other bits that he made himself! (I believe him). He left the outside totally...

    Couple of 16v questions

Thanks Alex, Ive already done the anti-roll bar bushes! Ive got the car booked in to my local trusted Renault expert for Monday, so maybe he can shed some light on it all. I feel a big bill is coming!
