Very much your own tastes dictate which one is the best. Some purists think only the Williams 1 is the one. In reality, youll find that youre not spoilt for choice with less than 1200 built in total of the 1, 2 and 3!
The Willy 1 and early Willy 2s are Phase1, while the later Willy 2 and...
GR - couldnt help the timing! Its BenRs fault!
The IK is only there because the location of the PBV prevents me using my airbox - for the time being. Im well aware of the disadvantages of an IK on a 16v, but its not much of a problem on a car thats used mainly in the cool coastal air of...
Met with the master of all things mechanical this evening to see his new "runaround" tuned 16v. For a car with almost identical mods to mine it sounded very different. You forget just how fast these babies are until you sit in the passenger seat!
He had some interesting things to say about...
I thought the limit was 0.50% for the idle test. My last MoT emissions printout says this and my car had the figure of 0.49%!!!!
Are the garage doing more strict emissions tests than theyre meant to??
Ill always decide what car I want and then budget for it! I cant see me ever selling my mint 16v, so I guess Id like to start a collection!
Would love a Lancia Delta Integrale (Evo or not), Renault 5 Turbo/Turbo 2 wide-arch bad boys (not to be confused with 5 GT Turbo), Clio V6 Phase1...
Yup, I did mine in about 10 minutes. If you reach under the inlet manifold and feel around a bit its pretty easy to change the filter.
The last garage I got to do it said they had to remove the radiator! WTF!!?
Try the idle speed control valve (if its not an integral part of the throttle body). If you turn the engine on, then run around to the engine with the bonnet open and give the air pipe that goes to the idle speed control valve a squeeze. If the engine starts to stall, then you know it works...
The Valver was blessed with a body that most people dont touch - the wide arches, bonnet vent and fat bumpers are already there. Even the original wheels rock and 15" was pretty big back in the day.
Id keep your Phase1s on there as it looks just the way a Valver should - low and thats it...
NEWSFLASH!
Just picked up my 16v from Renatec in Bristol and there was a BB Turbo 16v there!! Early Phase1, in flat red. Wow!
The boss of the place said it was a really tidy piece of work.
I actually think the 16vs reputation is getting more widespread. If I went places a few years ago, no-one knew what it was - but now everyone does!
Many of the cars we regard as worthy are a result of very careful brand management: as good a car the Mk1 Golf GTi was, it was not the first hot...
As BobRTE has already said, it will become the custom classic.
:D

The 172s rear brake callipers are the same as those on the 5 GT Turbo and 16v/Williams series (not to mention all the Peugeot and Citroen models) - so theres 15 years of precedent there!
I reckon maybe you got some duff pads as I wouldnt say its a known problem.
Dont change the wheels! If you keep the car for any length of time, the novelty of flashy wheels will soon wear off and youll want the original look again (I speak from experience!). Does a 205GTi look better at ten years old with the original wheels or with three-spokes??? Hmmm!!
Williams prices have started to settle and £5k seems to be the psychological figure amongst enthusiasts, where the price goes up or down according to condition (one recently went for almost £8k on here). I dont think theyll fall now. There will always be the odd one thats being sold by someone...
Insurance the same? Thats really odd! I reckon its becuase the security on base Clios is a bit poo.
Whats the 1.9d like to drive? And how much did you pick your up for?
My torque arrives at 5000rpm and plateaus until 7000rpm.
Ive never hit the limiter in 5th. Ive had just over 130mph at 6500rpm - so about another 1000rpm to go - but I doubt itll go much faster than that!
My old 1.2 used to do "115mph" according to the mega-dodgy speedo. Book top speed...
