Depends how much you strip out but the problem is that most of the weight you strip out will be in the back and the front is where the big problem is. I might strip mine out for next time but I know it wont make a huge difference in the bends only on the straight line.

Ive just thourght the Mk1 has a proper wire on the throttle body might be worth removing the air filter and checking the throttle body is opening and closing fully as it should do. If the cable is worn or been knocked the throttle body might be staying slightly open.
