Face it. ALL cars make it down the food chain. You can't stop that. But you can offset that boy-racer stereotype, by ensuring that you don't drive your Clio like a twonk.
g
ditto. Love it, as it adds and extra bit of flair and theatre to the driving. I'm driving a Polo auto at the moment, and I soooo miss blipping, and heal and toe, although i'm knocking the gearbox down a few gears (D 3 2 1) when necessary, and I've sussed at which revs to do this for a seamless...
mate, what was the driving position like please? If you don't mind me asking, how tall are you? I'm 6ft. The reason I got rid of my C172 was because the wonky driving position killed my back. If this has not been fixed on the C197, then there's no way I'd buy one.
g
i believe that the 5th and 6th gears have been made taller, so in 6th at 75mph you're not bouncing off the rev limiter anymore ;-)
i don't have the tech data though.
g
cool beans!
Ballsie - i was all for the R27, until i heard reno were tweaking the ratios on 5th and 6th gear. Plus, i won't get my butt into gear to get an R27 before they're all snapped up, so i have to defer to the recently formed Plan E. :-)
g
guys, if not now, but over the course of the next few months, will it be possible to order:
- a stock 197 with the revised gear ratios, with...
- with the cup handling package as an option, with...
- the Recaros as an option
if so, I'm liking this combo :-)
cheers,
g
guys, what is the list price of R27, and what's a reasonable price to pay discount-wise?
FYI - my nearest dealer is on the Bath Road in Slough/Cippenham, or Reading. I'm not sure if there's one near Staines or in Maidenhead anymore.
cheers,
g
you must have hit some diesel/grease/oil in the road.
i had my 172 for five 'robust' driving years; the only time it snapped on me was when i hit some diesel on the road. Cars do not just 'snap' on normal roads at speeds relative to the bend.
g
Hey, alright? Hope you guys are well.
Ok, so I sold my Flamer C172 earlier this year to a lad on here. Since then I've been chilling in a 100k, Polo 1.4 Auto. Yep, it's every bit as dull as it sounds, but after years of fast cars, it's also a curiously liberating experience (costs peanuts to...
No, the test simulates hitting a car of equivalent weight in an offset collision, the most common of all accidents that lead to injury. An offset collision is even more demanding that a 100% head-on, as it concentrates the load on a smaller area. The barrier is deformable not to make test...
Indeed, NCAP results should be viewed in the context of other industry results (if you can bothered to do this. Personally, I can't). I *think* the Swedish company is called Folksam, an insurance company, and it lists injuries and fatalites per '000 cars, IIRC. Its results are usually typical of...
But Renault is a French car, so in the context of your statement, it was a perfectly fair comment to make.
And without wanting to split hairs, Hondas and Toyotas or the 80s and 90s had perceived high build quality...and lousy crash safety. So there isn't always a link between build quality...
cool, cheers Dave! Erm, the lighter....come to think of it, because you mentioned it, i've just noticed it's missing - I don't think I've seen it in the last three years :-)
g
Troops,
what's underneath the ashtray on a Clio? I've manage to drop a 50pence piece when taking out the ashtray (don't ask). In trying to fish out the 50p, I knocked it toward the gearlever. I know it's gonna rattle like hell now, but I'm worried if it could interfere with anything...
Cliosporters - I have seen pictures of the steering wheels that have been retrimmed by these guys, and - in the pics - they do look fantastic. It's worth requesting the pics just to get an idea of what's possible. Anyway, I'll be taking a look and having a feel for real at FCS.
g
thanks, fFion.
one hundred notes! blimey! do you use gold thread or something? :-) Fair's fair, and yep you do get what you pay for. Does the £100 make the rim look exactly the same as a new Clio 172 rim, or does it look a bit more special than that? I'm interested in what I'll get for my...
troops,
can any of you suggest where I might be able to get my steering wheel re-trimmed? It's going all wrinkly/gathered at the quarter to three position, and one of the thumb grips is peeling off. Has anyone had theirs re-trimmed, and what was the price roughly please?
cheers,
g
how are we defining raw?
A 172 is less refined overall than say, a new Golf GTI. And, IMHO, the Golf puts a tiny bit more fudge (no jokes) between you and what it's doing, so the C172 feels more tactile.
However, a 172 is prolly less raw than a 5GT Turbo. But is that because the 5GT is...
the 1980 ur-quattro was not, and never was, a hatch. It has a fixed rear bench, and a stubby little opening for the boot.
A hot hatch should be based on a car that's positioned as a small to medium sized hatchback. So, the 1992 Audi Quattro is not a hot hatch either, as that was positioned...
As an aside - I don't want to split hairs, but is the Cossworth not a hot hatch? It's not quite a super car, and neither's the Delta (remember, there were skinny bodied versions of the Delta HF Turbo, before it grew the fat arches).
g
It's an evolution thing. It took VW 20 years to work out how to make the new Golf GTI worthy of the name and at the same time to make it safe, too. This question has arisen every three years or so - some one asks 'is the hot hatch dead?', and the answer is:
Strada Abarth TC 2.0
205 GTI 1.9...
