1.8 16v common problems

My bro wrote his 1.1 Corsa off and he needed a new car to get to work so my old man has bought him a 1.8 16v and his only 19! im 20 stuck with my 1.2 8v, pissed off to say the least.

Anyway, he hasn’t picked it up yet and we are going to get it in about an hour or so, I haven’t seen it yet and don’t know much apart from its a 1.8 16v M reg 95, with 66k miles.

What problems will my bro have at this mileage cos I heard the cam belt usually needs changing around 60-70k. Also which arches are prone to rust? any thing else i should look about before my old man hands over the money?

rusty rear arches, rust around the rear wiper arm, stone chips on the nose, cambelt, power steering pump, water pump, service history very important.

M reg shouldnt have too much rust...unless its lived by the sea.

And apart from the belt, i wouldnt expect any major problems.

Youd be suprised.. heh.

90% of all Valvers Ive seen, had rust.. coming from the inside.. Both N regs.. (Well, one had been repaired, badly)

Depends how well (or not!) its sealed at the factory.

66k.. is just before the major 72k service.. so may need cambelt change.. etc..

Well, bristol....but my cars rust isnt related to that.....

But say brighton or hove....and the spray will f**k your car...you can taste the salt in the air.

Just got back from getting the car, first impressions very nice, paintwork looks mint, few stone chips on bonnet in light blue where the blokes t-cutted them . Completely standard in Williams blue I think, really nice.

No rust what’s so ever, few scraps on wind mirrors, but part from that bodywork is mint, plus the interior is in just as good condition.

It’s also had the cam belt replaced, with a reconditioned gearbox and a new stainless steel exhaust and few other bits replaced in the engine.

Few problems, the fan belt is slipping, but there’s a fan belt in the boot, so just means fitting it ourselves, and the Speedo doesn’t work, not sure why hopefully its a loose cable.

My car looks so sh*t next to it, as soon as a sell my car, im getting a mk2 172 in red or silver with very low milage, as my old mans gonna pay the rest after the money from my car.

Cant wait need power, ive got the slowest car out of almost everyone i no!
