1.8 16v Head Gasket Questions

This is all about my mates R19 16v.

Basically it started to overheat the other day and now the head gasget has gone. Hes a bit of a fool and tried to drive it for a bit and now it mis-fires like a b**ch. Does this mean hes likely to have warped his head causing this mis-fire?

He also drove it about half a mile without the cap to his header tank - will this do anything?

What price is he lookin at here roughly to get a head gasget done - with and without a new head?

I personally think its f**ked! Not too bad though cus if it is f**ked i get a nice black R19 leather interior and momo steering wheel!

Yeah he will - he drove it cause it was the only way he could pick up his girlfriend who was in a bit of trouble at the time!

As for the header cap thing - he lost it in the engine bay and had to get his car home!

Missfire is probably down to a simply leak of water or oil into the cylinder.

Just change the gasket and it should be ok.

But youll have to check the head for flatness before as i cant say if its warped or not.

£500+ for a full gasket set to be fitted (safest option)

If head needs re-surfacing looking at another couple of hundred quid - performance heads usually in the £400+ bracket (dont think a simple re-surfacing would be anywhere near that) Ask Ben R!

Check out http://www.bbperformancetuning.co.ukwww.bbperformancetuning.co.uk for prices on head gasket repairs, as a rough guide.

Be lucky to get it done by a non Renault specialist as alot of people will charge excessive amounts due to not wanting that bigger job.

he mite as well do it himself, only take a day to do, and cost a max of 100quid with new belt and tnsioners, and gaskets, etc. dont go n give these companies ur hard earned cash, when a bit of elbow grease can have it done for not a lot of cash.

lol @ the prices!
BB tuning will charge over £500 for head/manfold gasketts etc. Including fitting and VAT

I thought mine had gone but luckily a minor electrical fault meant it didnt cost me squat to fix.

I stand corrected about re-surfacing the head though!

But fcuk it, while its off get Ben to make it better!

If any one can get prices that are substantially cheaper for the parts and labour from a garage that you know wont fcuk up the work please tell me.

I know these prices are based on the Clio 16v but its the same engine!

Soneji - arent you the person that can build genuine Williams engines for £200 or less??

Suppose you can get turbo conversion for less than a grand as well?

DIY the are awkward but not impossible to work on, I took engine out to change my blown head gasket so could do a couple of other things also, its is more time consuming and annoying rather than being particularily difficult

Make sure he gets the head skimmed at the same time, as ben says, it wont cost much more, but itll definitely cause less problems in the long term.

No I dont make them lol. But you can make a Williams out of several bits and bobs if you have a diesel kicking about... waiting on me crank being delivered

remove the head and check it with a calibrated straight edge. alternativly there are plenty of firms that will check the head surface(warped etc) and do a leak test for cracks. if he has drove it a long time whilst it was overheating i personally would defo get the head checked.
