172/182 on the way - which one ???

Im in the process of seeking out a 172/182 but need a bit of advice on which to get.

Im planning to turbo it very similar to Butch's (not actually doing the work myself) but what would be the best base model to work on ?
I actually quite like the older model 172 (2000/01) but if the newer model is the better way to go then so be it.

On looking at k-tec's website the stage 1 turbo kit gets you to around 300bhp, what money/parts are needed on top of that to get it to the 350bhp mark ?

They also say thier forged con rods will handle power up to 600bhp, whats is the realistic top end bhp to be got out of a clio without engine transplants ?

Depends on your money mate, the high boost turbo conversion will cost into 5 figures and you will be lucky to get 300 bhp, if you want that much of a powerfull car, definately buy something faster to begine with.

A clio with around 200-230 bhp makes a very quick car and would be a nice realistic figure

Ph1's are probably your best base, for two reasons:

1st is a cable throttle not FBW throttle like the PH2's

2nd is simply they are half the price of the PH2

oh welcome too :)

Just had a better read on that turbo conversion and the stage 1 is actually 260bhp and the stage 2 is 300bhp, my mistake. But you think to get to the 300 mark its 10k+ ?

by the time you have uprated the suspension and brakes to cope mate yeah, what is it that is brought to go for a clio mate, will it be a track car, or a daily car?

Its gonna be a daily car mate. Im goin for a clio because i prefer it (looks and driveability) over past small cars iv had ie. gti 206, rs1800 fiesta, saxo. Just fancy somthin small and fast to wipe smiles of a few faces if u get me.

As far as money goes i was thinking around the 6k - 7k mark on mods.

Well a ph1 172 will cost you about 2k, and for that money you can have decent exhaust and brakes, and should be able to get up to around 210 bhp, maybe a lil more, throttle bodies would be lovely, iv driven ktecs low boost turbo conversion and its bloody impressive for just over 200 bhp

if your going for a rebuild, then buy a high miler mate, will save you at least 1k and tbf mines coming up on 130k and still kicks out std power

Mmmmmmm, Flame Red ph1's are lush in my unbiased opinion.

Just thinkin of the lower mileage as its not gettin the turbo treatment straight away. I want to be drivin something with decent bodywork/interior/wheels until such times.

That is proper tasty, 260bhp-300bhp under the bonnet and id be a happy man :D
They can be plenty fast without engine work TBH. Went past an E46 M3, and a Boxster at Bedford last week. I'd rather 240bhp from itb's/cam's than a Turbo. Easier on the drive train, sounds fantastic.

Just of the phone with Sean @ K-Tec and hes suggesting a low boost turbo for 220bhp - 240bhp. I was worried about traction and Sean has confirmed theres gonna be f**k all traction with 250bhp+ unless i stick another grand or so in it. Low boost turbo means i have very little work to do and can upgrade and later on which sounds the best way to go. Gonna get a run over and check out my options anyway.

Whats the pros and cons with itb's ?

from what i read, the clio does not like instant power going thought the gear box.

Would look at the supercharger kit also

  ITB'd MK1
the ph1 is the better engine for getting power out of unless you plan on fully modified internals. As a stock internals engine, they make more with identical mods, every single time. I've done direct comparison with just cams, just ITBs, ITBs and cams, supercharged, and the ph1 always makes more power

350bhp? In a front-wheel drive car? You're insane, man.

Check a few posts up, think im gonna stick with the low boost turbo (220-240bhp)
