172 Cup. Investment? Where are prices going?

I’ve seen for a while people suggesting prices of the 172 Cup are rising due to rarity of standard cars.
Is this a realistic opinion and if so where do you guys reckon the prices will get to?

I can’t see it being in the same league as Trophy, but correct me if I’m wrong.

What are the main things that’ll make it a good un’?
(Low miles, low owners, good history, good condition)

Opinions from all.
@R-Sport. Your thoughts as you’ve a very good track record and reputation for these?

  Mint 1*2's for sale-
You will need one thats sub 60k & in mint condition- ( proper mint )
you may be able to squeeze 4500-6k out of one the lower the miles-

But for that price everything needs to be perfect - ideally totally standard ( with the exception of say springs & exhaust )

Great brand tyres / perfect wheels / mint paint / great specialists history

Thing is based on that ^^^ criteria ive just ruled out 99% of the cups out there -
mostly because they were never meant to be 'exclusive ' like the Trophy ...

I know mines in the top 15 cups out there - I know that will sell between 3200-3500 depending on what I accept & thats on 116k
for the same car on 50k it would be up for £5k.

In 10 years time all decent 172/182s will be worth a few grand, although 172 Cups and especially Trophy's will command a premium. Look at the values of 205 gti's, R5GTT's, etc now compared with a decade ago. There won't be another performance hatch like the mk2 Clio RS again which will only add to values. Yes, the market is saturated now with plenty of cheap 172/182's, however they're getting to an age now where lots are at the end of their life, are getting broken for parts, etc. Get a good one now, keep it that way and play the long game. That's what I'm doing anyway ?

They'll get close, for a low mile example in mint condition.

Trophy values have always been high, and 172 Cup prices have always been low - it's just a correction.
Arguably the 172 Cup is just as special as the Trophy, it just wasn't a numbered limited edition.

The appreciation curve will be about as steep as ownership costs
vis a vis - if you have one now - you wont gain a great deal net - or lose either, however theres minimal long term profit in a 172 Cup

That was my thought. Similar with my old PB 182. Buy it clean. Kept it clean and maintained. Use it sensibly and keep standard and get your money back. Even potentially price rise but offsets the running costs.

For originality would you use Renault parts for stuff like bushes, discs, pads etc even though they’re weaker than some aftermarket parts?

Yes - it was worth a try but ultimatly that was to high for the miles no matter how mint it was..

The car was only a punt & something to tinker with TBH -
Also maybe it may have sold if I had left it up for a long time @£4k but Id rather just move it on :)

  Cup 172
I’ve got a 172 cup on 87k and annoyingly it suffers with the usual flaky speedlines and has a couple of paint touch ups.

But I do agree there is something about them that might make them worth something

In some years time there won’t be many Clio’s left, people are starting to break full cars now just for gearboxes and small things instead of having stuff refurbed. I’ve broken and seen broken around 40 Monaco’s so there’s got to be way less than 400 of them now, doesn’t stop me fully polybushing mine and putting buckets in it etc etc

They’re meant to be enjoyed and as long as you don’t do anything drastic they can always be put back to standard anyway

I'd always thought of 172 cups and pug 106 rallyes as being modern mini coopers (the real ones from the 60s) and might rocket up in price in the same way. Not so sure about that anymore as people get drawn to the more modern RS stuff and I'm not sure that the desire for "old cars" is what it used to be 5/10/20+ years ago. I saw a red jag e type droptop in London the other day and not one person, other than me, turned their heads to look. I found that really weird and made me start to think about the whole classic car thing not being of interest to younger people.
However, whatever does happen to prices in the future, the 172 cup will always be a special car and I hope I can get my backside into one soon!

That’s because people my ages and younger now are too engrossed in what HP a car makes and how fast it goes in a straight line.

These are the sort of people that spend £600 on a pair of trainers, get an A45 AMG on finance over 600 years and still live with their mam and dad. Whereas I’d rather have something that revs to the moon, has character and something that I can still work on in the driveway

There were more than 2000 172 Cups in Mondial so not exactly a collector car unless they’re really low miles and unmolested. I mean there’s less of my dCi in my colour and spec than there are Cups[emoji23]

I'd say a ford would probably show a better return on investment as they have a bigger following.

I mint Cup might be worth £9k but I doubt they'll be worth that for another 10 years?

I’d say values are going nowhere fast, there are dozens for sale at any one time, l know of a mint 22,000 miler that’s been on sale all Summer at £5750
What l would say is, if you buy a good one and look after it, you won’t lose any money on it.
Where as if you buy a new car you’ll lose thousands.
We just bought a VW Up GTi and it’s a superb little performance car but we’ll probably lose £8,000 over five years.

Interesting on the 22.5k cup, not seen that advertised?

Is this low mileage cup still for sale? And if so where?

My point was it’s not selling

So it’s clearly overpriced. Maybe one day very low mileage examples will appreciate but not at the moment it seems.

A lot of the Cups for sale are absolute dogs. Need belts doing, on original suspension, been thrashed around tracks etc etc. There were around 2700 Cups made for the UK market, but many have been broken, crashed, tracked or are in poor condition.

In my opinion good ones are worth the money. They don't need the belts changed in the next month, the paintwork is good and they don't have cheap tyres on.

Some people don't like projects, others do. You are not going to make loads of money on one. Buy a good one, enjoy it and I don't think you will loose much now.

Look at all the sites. There are less and less Cups available. Prices will only go one way. There will always be people who want them due to life getting in the way when they did want one.

I am lucky to have enjoyed my fair share, what a great car. I have also had a very good trophy and thoroughly enjoyed that. Enjoy them for what they are. If you are in the market for one, go test drive a few. You can definately tell a good one from one that needs a load of money throwing at it.

For the money they are a great car. I never used to think Renaults were very good, but now I have three!!! For the money what a great car.

  Land Rover
I would echo that, l looked at many before l bought my 182 and every one needed a whole hill of work.
The one l bought had a great history from previous owners on here and had plenty spent on it.
However l still managed to spend £2600 on it within three months.
NOW it’s a good one that will cost the next owner nothing for a decent amount of time.
But l’ll never get my investment back, l think it’s worth £4000ish

cup have been on the up for a few years now. i saw one sell for £3,000 about 2 1/2 years ago. there are a lot of car that sell that aren't advertised anywhere, just people asking around etc.

i've got a 2 owner cup in at the mo and have told the owner to ask strong money for it, may not sell quick but will still sell.

And overpriced

But the only work you do on your car is polish it.

As such, it does not matter if it drives well & is reliable, as it never goes anywhere.

if you buy a good one and look after it, you won’t lose any money on it.

That's my plan. I bought one for £1500 that had all the belts done and is in pretty good condition apart from a few dents in the bonnet. I've replaced all the dampers and a couple engine mounts & a wheel bearing but parts are pretty cheap.

I'm just going to keep it standard and enjoy it, I currently do quite a few miles so going to look at getting the train to work 2 or 3 days a week to keep the mileage down. Can't see me losing any money on it when I come to sell it.

My dent man fixed my bonnet in 15 minutes.
It had numerous small dents as most do, but now it’s perfect.
If my dent man can do it, then any others should be able to do the same.

Seems like most clios have dented bonnets from people pushing them shut. Even the owners manual tells you to drop the bonnet, but so many people still push ?

What did the dent man charge you/how long was he?
