172 cup vs boxster s

  BMW 330d :)
I had a shot on a private road just the other day against a old model boxster s from a standing start. He had a passenger and I was on my own and there was nothing in it. Neck and neck, up into 4th gear.. After that I think he would have had me. He got a slightly better start due to the rwd traction off the line but I pulled back on him slightly and stayed side by side with him. He looked quite impressed that a 10k 172 cup was keeping up with him.

And he was giving it the full treatment, up to the limiter in every gear.

Very happy with my cup.

Then he can't drive for sh1t mate. I know this because my dad also has a Y reg Boxster S 3.2 manual, and it destroys my 172 in any gear, at any speed and at anytime.

The only reason i can think of that you might have kept up with him is:

A - He cant drive for s**t and has no idea about launching it.
B - It was a tiptronic model which as about 1 second slower to 60 than a manual.
C - Both of the above (highly probable).

Believe me, they will kill a 172/182 no questions asked.

0-62 = 5.5 seconds (conservative)
Top speed = 167mph
Troque = 236ft/lb @ 4700rpm

(Sorry to rain on the parade :()

Nah, a decent well ran in cup could get pretty close to 6.3 seconds in decent conditions with a good driver. Certainly enough for there only to be 1/4 or 1/2 a car in it to 60...after that its game over anyway.

Eitherway i stand by the fact that the bloke driving the porsche either fluffed a change, shifted at wrong rev or just couldn't drive.

Porsche Boxters are girls cars, men only buy them because they cannot afford a 911

It's funny when people say that.

And the reason you bought a 1.4 Clio is because you couldn't afford to buy/run/insure a Sport model, or was is because you really wanted a 1.4?

I wouldn't buy one myself, but Boxters are good cars.

Well unless you were there you couldnt say. He had a passenger and I didnt which could easily account for the 0-60 diff.

Boxster = 2.7 litre. (240bhp)
Boxster S = 3.2 litre. (280bhp)

Ill get some photo's of my old mans, pretty sweet on 18" Porsche split rims. They sound lovely though, engine right behind your head and it just sounds sweet.

Don't make me laugh mate, like i said i've had plenty of experience racing my dad. And frankly i'd love being able to whoop him, sadly it's not a possibility. He knows how to drive the car, and i know how to drive my 172 - but im a speck in his mirror upto 100.

And unless his passenger was a 22 stone whale in which case wouldnt be able to get in and out of the car, i'd say 1 passenger makes bugger all difference in a car with that power.

Like i said i dont normally discredit peoples claims and im not stating you didn't keep up with him (you probably did) but im saying the Porsche driver was clueless/crap/fluffed a change or whatever...but if it was a manual Boxster 3.2 S, then he should have destroyed you - period!

  BMW 330d :)
Well mate you do have a full fat 172 which is about 0.5 sec slower to 60 and the extra passenger he was carrying would account for the extra weight and therefor slower acceleration due to a reduced pwr/weight. And it wasnt a tiptronic, there wasnt any rev slurring between changes. With these factors included it would easily match it.

I spent 3 years going out with a girl who had a 911 (964) on 18" split rims...and a 4" exhaust

Was a convertable but won't hold that against her. That's a proper Porsche, air cooled too - none of that girlie Boxter wannabe rubbish :rasp:

Ipso Facto mate, Boxsters are girls cars. I bought a 1.4 clio because i couldnt insure anything else, being 20 i now own a 182 as i can afford to insure one.

yeah with quite a bit more power. The original boxster s has 260 bhp and a bhp/ton of 200 according to evo. Maybe I have a good example of a cup and his boxster was a bit sick ;)

it wasnt a boxster S then was it! a boxster s is faster than a Cup as Ozzy says i'm afraid, i know this to be the case...... Would be great if the Cup was as fast, but it just isnt.

I wouldnt say they were girls cars, not as aggressive as a 911 but they handle amazingly and have a fair bit of poke. I would trade in my cup for one.
Evo have them as their sports car of choice and thats over elises and the like.

What with a boxster s badge on the boot and twin tailpipes? How do you work that one out?

Yep - was a Carrera 2 as well. My laundry bill has never been so high as when I used to drive that thing :D

  Meg 225 with cup packs.
Porsche Boxter came in 2.5, 2.7 and the S with 205, 225 and 260bhp respectively. According to, http://www.letstorquebhp.com/rwd.asp
Not trying to be pedantic though. So i would say it would have been quite close if it was the early model, bhp/ton is very similar.

what the hell are you doing driving a 1.4 clio!? tell him to share the wealth :rasp:

A phase 1 boxster with the 2.5 engine in and 1 passenger would struggle to keep up with a 172 cup.

This thread is just comical, why do people think that nothing on the road is quicker than a 172/182? I sometimes have to swallow my pride, and when an STI pulls up next to me at the lights, well i hang my head and dont bother trying...

To clio 1.4, well a boxster is a womans car, an elise is a hairdressers car...you astound me! And really you do need to go outside and look at your own car.

A boxster has one of the best chassis and handling charaters of any car in its class. The Elise is one of the best track cars there is and handles in godlike fashion. Please tell me a car with the masculine characteristics suitable for yourself thats a convertable, thats affordable and anything else you care to add?

Fraser, show me a Cup thats 0.5 seconds faster to 60...you need to sort your power/weight out, 1 passenger does not make a 5.5 second car, a 7.0 second car.

Fact of the matter of course, you met a Boxster S with a poor driver and you thought your cup is somehow a 5.5 second car too. In the cold hard light of day, your car is still a 6.5+ second car. And is a good second slower than a Boxster S.

LOL @ Day ^^^

In my experience they're not driven by "drivers" - no matter what model every one I've come across on track without exception, I've gone past like it was stood still :)

I'd love an early 2.5 - just enough power so you have to really work the chassis to get the best from it.

Look my cup has been verifed 0-60 in 6.5 by numerous mags. The boxster s's 0-60 in 5.5 sec is a "manufacturers claim". With the boxster s being a poor example of one and mine being a quick one, and the added weight of a passenger they could quite easily be near equal. You just dont like the thought of your daddies "s" being matched by a quicker example of your car. ;)

And yes I've been destroyed on numerous occasions by all sorts of cars, Imprezas included. I think your just wishing you had bought the faster 172 ;)

Oh and my bro has a brand new gsxr 600 which would hand ur dads nancy boxster its a**e, even giving him a 100 mtr head start ;)

lol
