172 Cup

  172 Cup
Picked this up last week. 41k miles 2 owners. It's my first ever French car as I'm a VW nut at heart.
Previous car history goes MK1 Golf GTI, SEAT Leon Cupra R 225, MK2 Golf GTI 16v, Golf G60 Rallye, Caddy TDI, Corrado VR6 and finally MK4 Golf GTI TDI Anniversary.
Ive been looking for a cheaper car recently and it was a toss up between another Leon R or a 172 Cup.
The car is pretty standard bar a KTec stealth exhaust which will be coming off as I can't stand the motorway drone.
So far this week I've already repaired a scratched front wing, had all the dents removed by my PDR guy at work and given it a full exterior detail(washed, iron x, clayed then polished with Scholl S17,Wolfs seal and shine then finished with Wolfs body wrap. The headlights also got a quick refurb but I will be having another go and there's still some crazing visible.
I know Fred at BTM so he's having the car next Friday for major service with plugs, all the fluids changed and the full cambelt/aux belt job with a new dephaser.
Future plans include Eibach springs with new oem dampers, rear anti roll bar, bonnet repaint and the hideous blue dash trims coated in carbon. Will also be refurbing the wheel as well soon as they are peeling quite badly.

Looking quiet at work this week so bonnet repaint tomorrow.
What are peoples thoughts on wheel refurbs? Stay bright silver or go anthracite?

Bonnet repaint all done. It wasn't very chipped but some were starting to rust.

All sanded down and ready for primer. The really light aerosoled areas have been etched primer to cover any bare metal.

Three coats of high build primer.

All prepped and painted Mondial Blue. I managed to find a good enough match to avoid blending onto the front wings.
Lacquer was flatted with 3M Trizact discs 1000,1500 then 3000 on a DA. Polished back up with 3M Fast Cut, Menzerna Intensive polish and finished with Menzerna Final Finish.

Hoping to get all four wheels refurbished next week. Not bad going seeing as I've only had it a week.

  172 Cup
My cups slowly getting where I want. Since getting it the cars had a full service, coolant and new header tank.

Yesterday Fred had it back for new cambelt, aux belt and dephaser. The two belts were done 12k ago by a known specialist but the timing was out and the dephaser wasn't replaced. Also had new plugs(looks like the originals came out!) cam seals(ones fitted were leaking badly) oil/filter and new gearbox oil. Fred also sealed the rocker bolts as these were leaking oil slowly.

The cars so much more responsive and quiter now. I'm genuinely impressed with it.
Just got a quick visit back to BTM next week for a Powerflex dogbone and cat fitting kit. The cat rattles horribly over 3500rpm so I cannot wait for that to be sorted.

Future plans are new front shocks, Eibach springs, Whiteline rear arb, top mounts, steering wheel retrim and carbon skin the hideous blue dashboard inserts. Looking to get the wheels refurbed when the better weather comes too.

Had quite a lot of work done since the last update.

All new engine mounts with Powerflex dogbone.

New Renault shocks and top mounts with Cooksport springs. Cant recommend these enough. Excellent ride quality but good handling when pushing on. Rides better than my MK4 Golf did on KW coilovers!

Rear wheel bearing (last one had not been torqued up and was knackered)

New genuine Hella headlights (£36 ea from ebay)

Still need the wheels refurbing, rear calipers and new front brakes with braided lines.

Looks good!

love a clean standard looking cup, let me know if you ever want to do a deal on a LCR, getting some strong urges for a cup again.

I do like them and had one when it was new. Ive always wanted a MK4 R32 and still do. Maybe next.
