Another day at Castle Combe, to say it was too bloody hot is a massive understatement.

Car was faultless again and apart from my mates ludicrous FD2, nothing overtook me all day.

I’m at the limit with the car now though. I can’t make it go any faster. I’m consistently 1.21’s. So I’m confident in the car, the car is (imo) at its limit. So it’s gripper diff time.

£££🤮

The yellow Ph1 I’m chasing is 220bhp, diff, cage etc etc. within 3 corners I’m past him and within a lap I can’t even see him. So it’s definitely a capable car. It just needs a diff. Desperately.

Long overdue update… and many many people tagged…

@colesy was selling a freshly rebuilt gearbox with a Gripper Diff that had been built by the man himself @NorthloopCup so I had to have it. £1500 later I have a new gearbox.

Then, if it’s having a shiney new box it needs a clutch… £600 later I have this;

So it’s now up with @lemonnobby - the best Renault specialist in Bristol and he’s going to fit the gearbox and clutch and also check the car over as it’s been parked up for about a year.

Oil and filter with this stuff (I normally only use genuine but @Hixle gave this time me FOC. What a lovely man)

And then 2 new ph1 driveshafts that I got from @Russ_16v many many years ago.

Hopefully it will all be back together by the end of this week and we can start booking some track days.

Peace out. X

You driving or trailering the car? If the latter you got space/ability to take mine too?
I could then bring all the spares and a kitchen in the van.
LETS TALK
I’ll be trailering mate, I don’t know how big you think my trailer is, but not that big. 😂

Previously I have seen you with a flatbed and then a trailer...
I have access to a flat bed, but it has no towbar.
I’m also buying an X5 and a trailer this week. But I can’t combine the two sadly.

No worries. Will have to have a think. Unsure if driving the car all that way is viable/sensible
It is also the weekend around my Wife's 40th....

You’re more than welcome to load my car up with your belongings mate. Should make the trip a bit more comfortable.

So my long suffering g mechanic Paul ( @lemonnobby ) has very kindly taken on the task of fitting the new gripper’d box and a new Sachs racing clutch whilst I tan myself in Spain.

He’s having trouble because the OE clutch cable is not meant for a Mk1 and it’s not fitting with the Sachs clutch.

He assumed I ordered it from Kam Racing so contacted them. (But I ordered it from Pure)

Kev at Kam then rang Nick at Pure, Nick then emailed me and asked for Paul to call him.

It’s now in the process of being resolved.

Just wanted to give a shout to Kev and Nick, what awesome blokes. 💪🏽

Absolutely no idea mate. It was about 12 years ago we put the engine in. 😂

It worked perfectly fine before with a standard clutch. But I guess a stronger/different clutch is beyond the realms of whatever is in there.

Sometimes need to trick the mechanism too for it to work, the ratchet on the pedal end can be a pig, shout me up if you need a step by step to set it as I've done it about a million times, lol

Why may I ask have you moved to a different clutch?

It’s a new box with a gripper. Been recommended to uprate the clutch by numerous people. For the sake of an extra £350 to save an £1800 gearbox, rightly or wrongly I thought it best.

Fair enough, most of the MK1 F4R lads are on quaifes with stock clutches, the only chap who used to have a gripper was F7R and can't remember what clutch and he's sadev now... Still slow .. But sadev

Not wanting to sound like an arsehole but that does sound a bit like b****cks to me, ok it's not quite a reasonable comparison as I've been running an F7 fitment clutch but I've ran a Volvo 480 turbo clutch (cheap as f**k too) for years with a Gripper'd box & the only time it's really failed me is now that I've got the Sadev it can't handle flat shifting at 8k so I'm only now fitting a Sachs motorsport clutch

I’m the one who told him to run the Sachs clutch because I’ve seen more valeo failures than I care to remember. This is the ‘oem’ valeo unit. Strangely the genuine Renault valeo doesn’t have the same failure rate.

Seems like it's just an F4 thing then, what actually fails on them?

Not really, I've used Valeo for all 3 cars with a total of 150k miles or more and all three have done at least one trackday, with about 30+ total between them.... Zero issues or failures

Mechanical sympathy, not banging downshifts and watching the needle smack 8k helps. Loads of people drive their cars as if they've nicked them and cry when they blow up🤣

Without meaning to sound like a knob, it’s my toy. I’m not worried if it takes a bit longer to sort, or it costs a bit more money.

If it was a daily it would have gone OE only and I’d have chosen no other route. But as it’s a bit of an oddball, and it’s my toy/hobby, I’m not worried if it takes longer or costs more.

(Just as long as it’s ready for a shake down at Combe and then a full day at CSF! 😂)
