172 Major Service

Took my 172 mk1 in to Renault to book it in for a minor sevice (done less than 24k) but service said that as the car is over 3yrs old now, then it should have a major service instead, & a blah blah belt changed (dont think it is actually called that ;) ). So my budget for a £175 service has now changed to £480

Does this sound about right?

Have just phoned 2 other Renault dealers & they have said it is bollox.

Just needs a minor sevice. I have booked it in with Renault Birmingham instead!

yep major service is at 36k and is expensive. Cost me about £400, the main bit being alternator belt -> a bumper off job apparently.

Sutton wanted £225 & Birmingham £188.

I can look around the Bullring to pass the time as well ;)
Check out the odd stuff they sell in Selfridges food hall.

Is it important to get this replaced? I know the manual says every 2yrs or 36k but it has only done 20k. 3yrs old now though.

Will it be ok leaving it till the 36k service??

What they are talking about is the accessory belt not the timing belt, the accessory belt runs ya alternator, aircon compressor, water pump (?) etc....

Personally Id leave it. On my old valver I waited until 72k to get them all done. If your altrnator belt snaps youll conk out, no harm done, AC belt no harm done, Power steering, more difficult to park.

but if theyre all seperate belts (???), if on goes then it could chop through the others.

Is the water pump belt driven? that could obviously cause problems but again not immediately fatal like a cam belt snapping.

Do they not make belts to last anymore, or just a money making sceme for them if you want to stay in warranty? Doesnt seem like progress to me.

The water pump runs off the cam belt which is behind a cover. Wouldnt like to say what effect the accessory belt going would have. If it could damage the alternator or AC compressor then I would say its worth getting it done.

I had an accessory belt tensioner fail and this damaged the alternator. The total bill was about £800 warranty work, alternator alone costs £450.

I havent had to have my belt changed by the schedule yet as it has been replaced twice under warranty so far.

I cant believe the life of a belt like this would be so short, I meant 2 years ?! but I cant think they say it needs doing just for the fun of it as it is a bit of a faff and manufacturers seem keen on less intensive servicing these days (but then again!). Is there a specific note made of this in a Mk2 172 service schedule ?
