172 Ph1. Pointers please..

  Leon Cupra R 225
Right, Im thinking about getting one once I have the funds :dapprove:

However...

I'd like to get some feedback from the experienced owners/ know it all's ;) on here, for things like common problems, servicing costs, what to look out for, what to check has been done if viewing one etc.
Am I right in thinking the 172 Mk2 is generally more unreliable when it comes to electrical issues? All comments/feedback much appreciated, just don't want to go looking at one blindfolded if you know what I mean.
Also where are they in the pecking order for speed, 2nd to the Mk2 Cup?

Cheers

I bought mine blind.

No serious issues, nothing that friends with newer ones have not also experienced.

Few things to check....

first is to make sure the cambelt has been changed, as all are now over 5 years old they should have been done.

second check the cable throttle isnt worn or fraying, its a cheap fix but always one to look for

Expect usual wear around the steering wheel, electric window switches, dirvers seat bolster.

Not heard much about electrical issues to be honest, i dont know anyone thats had a problem tbh, only a few people having dodgy headlights.

As for speed, they have the best induction, and a cable throttle out of all the RS's and are also very nice handling cars as standard, because of the lack of toys they are pretty much as light as the cup as well. So yeah i'd prob say they were second.

Also look out for cars with the green gear shift light, as these generally have an alloy bonnet which was on a limited number of cars

I bought mine blind.

Pretty much same here, had already agreed a price before seeing it. It's also got the light and ally bonnet :)

No major problems, mostly just normal servicing and consumables.

I posted a while ago all the things I've done on it, think it's something like:

2 minor services
1 major with belt changes
new springs
new shocks (front leaking but changed them all)
new top mount
Passenger window regulator
4 tyres
New discs and pads all round
Exhaust as renault one fell off
Cam Tensioner

That's in almost 2 years and about 30 thousand miles. The suspension was leaking at the front so replaced all the shocks at the same time, also took the opportunity to stick some Eibach Pro Lines on at the same time, the difference was amazing. The top mount was found to be on it's way out when this was done hence that was replaced too.

Mk1 are older so suffer but with there stnd alone system are easier to sort and fix and there no UCH or electric thottle body which is easier as they are often failure but the phase 1 has more wiring it it as the no ultiplex system etc.

Speed

172 Cup
182 Cup
172 phase 1
182 full fat
172 full fat

Mkaes no different you get good 172 full fats which are lower and quicker quicker than 172 Cups.

Cheers for the feedback guys. Middo - is the green shift light on the dash and pretty easy to spot? Just so I don't go in blind lol.

You'll spot it, you'll be able to tell if tis alloy by the weight of the bonnet too as its noticably lighter

to be honest best decision i've ever made. The speed is there when u want it, but when u're pottering around town etc the car is totally drivable. Handles as well as my old 1.2 on coilovers on standard suspension, and the gear box on it is soooo nice. Clutch is manly to say the least and steering is quite heavy compared to the dynamique but that just adds to the drive and feel of the car

yeah thats what Ive heard it's easy to use around town just popping out for lunch or shopping with the bird. I wish I had put one on my xmas list now lol.

how long did it take you to find one mark? in a good condition and spec etc.
and while im thinkin of it could someone please list the colours the ph-quick came in... I know of yellow, silver, and the anniversary green. is there a dark blue aswell? correct me if Im wrong lol

go for the 172 cup if you can stretch to it, looks a million times better, and is probably the best all rounder

This is true, only thing is the general view is that the Mk2 is electrically not as reliable as the Mk1. Starting problems, cutting out etc.. Puts me off paying more...

Colours:

Blue
Black
Yellow
Red
Silver
Green "Exclusive"

Bought mine pretty much blind, genuine honest seller which always helps - plus he took me for a spirited drive beforehand and that had me hooked.

Only thing I've had to sort are new springs (Eibach Pro's went on) and exhaust centre section. Generally, as has already been said, very versatile cars: comfy to drive around town once you get used to the clutch but fantastic to open up. I wouldn't change mine for anything else for the same money.

As for the Cup - I prefer the looks of the Ph1, so that's all down to preference, and I love my ABS, A/C and the Ph1 seats are so much better!

Cheers for that Ad, my mind is soo made up, just a case of getting the funds together. Everyone seems to mention getting used to the clutch but I doubt it's worse than a 1.6 Corsa lol. Im thinking of tracking it as it'll only be used at weekends so thinking coilovers. ABS and A/C def give it a big advantage over the Cup. Plus the cost!

wouldnt really agree with that, I could have easily have afforded a cup, but to be honest the ph1 looked much more agressive and I barely see any on the road other than mine, so they've got that rarity factor the 172 cup hasnt. As for being the best all rounder, tis debatable. Its the best track car but wouldnt say it was the best for comfort, etc etc.

To be honest i was lucky, u rarely see any yellow ph1's come up for sale but the silver one i was gonna buy fell through (which was lucky) so went to look at this one and was an absolute minter so was sold straight away.

totally agree with that, I see a few Cups around my way and can't rememeber seeing a ph1 for months... My mind is made 100%. That is the thing Mark I've been looking recently on autotrader, pistonheads etc would rather not go through ebay, but you don't see many up for sale. What do you think of the green exclusive model? tbh ideally Im after silver, sunflower or black but the exclusive's are even rarer surely?

  Chocolate Bar™
actually not lol, exclusives are the second commonist to to the silver ones, theres 172 exclusives, see this link for the numbers of the others...

http://www.renaultsport.co.uk/roadcars/heritage/clio172/data.asp

The reason why any colour bar silver is so rare as that they were uk import only. which means they were shipped in from abroad on request by the dealers, but are totally uk specced cars and therefore are not classed as imports. Thats why if your not gonna get a silver one, the wheels are normally unlaquered and therefore become pitted, hence why i had to have my wheels refurbed.

PM craig172. he has a gorgeous iceburg for sale

Good link cheers Mark. Thank god for this forum and ppl like you, this is priceless advice. So we're the titaniums UK import too? Im not too worried about the wheels as Im most likely going to be changing them, maybe pro race 1's 15" gloss black or something lightweight for track. :) I'd love to get Craig's but Im not in a position to buy just yet, so am using the waiting process to get some really priceless info before I buy.

Thanks again Mark :)

no probs matey, titaniums were british cars so had properly laquered wheels so not a problem, however all silver cars are boring ;)

There should be a lot more for sale after christmas, only a couple for sale at the mo on pistonheads.com, but keep checking as its a really good site.

lol I quite like the titaniums though! with the right wheels I think they look mint. Yeah it's quite scarce at the mo on pistonheads and the trader, but there's some dogs on the trader, you can just tell. I'll keep looking and getting my knowledge of them built up in the meantime!

yeah to be honest i nearly bought a silver one, and with the right wheels to break up the colour they can look stunning (ie carbon copys, mr stabbys munchkins, fubars etc etc).

Another thing to look out for is that silver cars normally sell for much less, you can pick an average mileaged one for around the 3.5k mark, coloured varieties normally start at around the 4.5k mark (i paid 4600 for mine with 54k).

  Leon Cupra R 225
yeah exactly what Im thinking if I go for a titanium or get an iceburg but I'd rather be a bit different.

I've seen them on the trader, 3.5k - 4k for iceburgs, but am not sure whether they are going to be any good or not. I'll probably have nearer 5.5k to spend so would like an absolute minter (top bracket) ph-quick ideally.

  Ph-Sold!
You can get bargins if you shop around though, especially as they're all around 5 years or older. I got my Y Iceburg with 25k for 3.2k in early November, if you've got cash now is the time to buy as prices will be at a low for the year.

  172
Hey. I bought my ph-1 172 only a few months a go, but so pleased with the car. Easy to drive around town and quite fast when needed to be. Does not take long to get used to the clutch.

  Trophy #473
had mine for 8 months now, ive had to replace the drivers window mechanism, had to get the cambelt done and new front brakes and a service, paid a bit much for mine considering it didnt have the above alreday done, i paid £5250 back in feb. saying that all the ones i looked at (7) were sheds or modified and this one was 20 miles away. need new suspension top mounts as they are really loud, and my AC has packed up. ummm other than that f**king well happy with it, its fast and comfortable and handles brilliantly, very predictable, wicked standard engine note too.
