172 psh1 .... again

  C63 AMG, F430 & 172
And so it begins,

I quite fancied a quick 172 again! After a quick look at my options (n/a, turbo, SC) I decided that I wanted a quick psh1!

Stoddies old bus came up for sale for £3500! I liked the spec sheet but I knew it was going to be a shed lol. The spec list was...

Engine:
Jenvey 48mm ITBs with matched inlets
Catcams 2428 camshafts
Lightened and balanced bottom end.
Mild headwork
Omex 600 ECU
Lightened Flywheel
182 Manifold with magnex twin
Sports cat
Samco Hoses in yellow

Oil catch tank
Chassis and Brakes:
KW v2 Coilovers
Ktec Chrome Front strutbrace
Wilwood 4 pots with Galfer 2 peice discs
5mm Spacers all round

Exterior:
Rota Circuit 8 lightweight wheels with Toyo T1R tyres
6500k Xenon Headlights
Lightweight Alloy Bonnet with Aero catches
Ph2 Rear Bumper and Lights
Cup Front splitter
Trophy/V6 rear spoiler
Colour coded side trim, mirrors and fog light surrounds

Interior:
Sparco sprint 5 seats with Low Subframes
Sparco steeringwheel
Alpine Type X Front components
Boston Rear speakers
Sony MDX800 CD player
Battery relocated to the boot

The initial list of problems seemed to be;

Pads and fluid (brakes will not lock up )
Wheels and tyres are not my first choice
Engine mounts are all broken
Tracking is way off
Suspension needs sorting (levels and spring rates)
Clutch seems week (iirc its only 16k old too )
Bit of rust on arches
Exhaust is s**te
The loom needs replacing as its just falling to bits, too m any joints and it’s all over the place.

Engine has a misfire at 3000 rpm
The map is all over the place (over fuelling)
The radiator is rank and bodged on
The boot floor is covered in what’s left of dynomat tar stuff
One of the HIDs flashes loll.
The cup splitter is broken.

I could live with the above it wouldn't cost too much fix and I got a good chunk off the car so I bought it!

lol, due to being in leeds for the last couple of years (like having your head in the sand) what the hell happened to the last epic build that i shotgunned a lift in?? PM if needs be!

jamie

oh and looking forward to a new project thread since i am back in the shire!

I got home after a 260mile drive from Essex and bar the brakes and slight misfire all seemed well!

Took it out and it felt quick, not as quick as I thought the! But still it shifted and the noise is awesome! I was out in the car for about 2 hours and it seemed to be running well...that is until I noticed a small pool of oil where it had been parked on my parents drive earlier (it was only there for 15 mins max and there was a good amount of oil there)

I then went to where the car had now been parked for about 1 hour....I could of cried! it had pissed out most of the oil all over my parents drive and the dip stick was showing it had a minimal amount left in the sump!

What a crock of s**t TBH, I knew stoddie had had lots of issue with GDI and the car! reading up before I bought it, it seemed to have a habit of pissing oil out over other peoples car! It now decided to do it on my drive!

My initial thoughts were just to find the leak and fix it, drop new oil in and get rolling again. But you just know it won’t last two minutes! Previous posts indicate that it keeps having oil issues and the engine just isn’t right! There was also various other issues that were bugging me too such as its been over fuelling so much for so long I'm going to be amazed if the bores aren't totally buggered as there won't have been much oil film left! The loom is a hash! It’s being reved to 7600rpm for the latter of its life and it’s on standard bearings with stock big end bolts etc!

So I’m just going to start fresh with a new engine. I plan to remove the bodies and cams, then have and other 730 re built by a machine shop (headshopUK) with forged rods, high comp woosner pistons, arp rod bots, balanced crank and new lightweight fly. Then I will send the head off to have it fully gas flowed. Then once the BE and head is with me, I can assemble them together and get it fitted along with a new loom etc (after a lot of tidying up of the bay)
I’m hoping Paul at RStuning can sort me a map out for the omex, I have been recommended him by more than a few people!

Good stuff fella

Finally, someone will sort this out. It could be a weapon when done properly.

Looking forward to your progress dude.

Are you going to buy the other half of Machine Mart this time? lol

Yeah  I love those feckers in there!

I'm baned from working in the garage though so im going to have to pay other garages to do a lot of the work (birchdown ;))

I can't get it in the double garage beacuse my nan has gone into a home, so we have all her stuff in there! (painting my nan's clothes and furnture green FTL)

I cant work on it in the side garage too as;

a. Its too small!
b. Its like -5 in there!
c. I spilt oil over the floor last time and my dad was not happy!

Cant you kick a set of Polish out from one of the houses you own that has a garage?

You can come up here and i'll find you a field to work in..

LOL was thinking that, non of them have garages!

The field sounds good! its warmer up there too!

IIRC i have a mildly heated garage that is being cleared this week for multiple PCing, but could be rented out a small charge*?

*full ownership of the car, bar running costs

if you need help with omex wiring, ive had to re-do my loom about a month ago.

the initial oil problems were caused by a cracked piston.....

again due to bad mapping and detonation - but im not going to go into that bit.

over pressure in the sump was blowing the oil out the breather.

engine was fully rebuilt (twice - maybe more!) and was fine when it was sold onto phil. with no oil leaks at all. this was only 18 months ago!

crank sensors which i replaced were re-connected using crimped connectors - so someone else has done a botch up job on them. the rest of the wiring was as GDI left it.

hope you get it all fixed fella

It was a great looking car when Stoddie had it. Very quick too, got to 100+ hugely quicker than my 182 at the time.

LOL @ at the father/garage comments....

I have to beg of my Dad to let me near the garage now!!

Should only take you a few weeks to sort this out lad ;)

Should be a nice little project if your putting in as much work as your old one, the black one that got supercharged right? may be thinking of some one else's, was a while ago i remeber reading it :S

Think you got what you paid for there, but with enough time and effort im sure it will be a weapon.

Okay, I've weighed up my options with the engine. I've split them into four different options:
Option 1 -
£200 short motor purchase (will be a straight bottom end)
£500 short motor rebuild (tri-metal big end bearings etc)
£150 head rebuild
£500 high comp pistons
£80 ARP big end bolts
£100 gasket/ headset
£120 cambelt kit
£150 (estimate) Birchdown to remove and refit the engine
£370 (estimate) RSTuning remap
£250 short alloy radiator
£100 oil/ lube
Total = £2, 520 + vat = £2, 898

Option 2 -
£150-£300 ebay bottom end
£120 cambelt
£100 gasket/ headset
£150 birchdown
£370 RST map
£250 alloy radiator
£80 ARP big end bolts
£100 oil/ lube
Total = £1, 300 + vat = £1, 495

Option 3 -
£150 birchdown
£200 to fix what's fucked
£80 ARP bolts
£370 RST map
Total = £800 + vat = £920

Option 4 -
£2,000 ready build high-comp engine (I know of one for sale)
£370 RST map
£100 oil/ lube
£150 birchdown
Total = £2, 620 + vat = £3, 013

I'm not keen on option 3, and option 4 is expensive. Option 2 I don't get a high-comp fresh engine and option 1 is bloody expensive and only gets me an extra 10bhp but the engine's fresh.. I could spend the £700 difference between 1 and 2 on an OMP multi-point cage.

  Whichever has fuel
Me personally, i'd go for strength and reliability first.

No point in having a fandango cage and all the shiny bits if it keeps f**king up after every outing.

I think it would run sweet with option two, if certain people havnt messed with then the BEs are good and solid! The ARPs will hold the rods true and if the map is right then it shouldn't f**k up.

Option one gets me high comp and fresh BE but it's 700 more!

remember those prices are the costs if everything goes correctly ;)

would stick another few hundred on top just incase.

imo you should go for option 3. Make sure the engine is fine and just stick to the current spec (not a bad spec) with a RST map it should run as sweet as anything.

meaning you can get driving asap and using the car. Otherwise it will end up like the other project....a money pit.

The only part that worries my about option 3 is it's been runnin with that map for so long it's going to be sooooo fucked. It's been pissing oil all over the Scottish lot since gdi re built it!

it takes you 45mins to remove an engine, get it stripped and assess the damage.

just do a full service of the internals and check that everything is fine.

option 3 would spiral, option 1 or 2 only way to go, the cars rapid as is. No point tuning it further just get it running straight.
