182 Cup seat comfort for 6’4 driver

Hi there,

Ive had my 182 Cup for about 3 weeks now but I just cant get comfortable in the seats which is giving rise to bad lower back pain. Is this common for tall drivers?

Ive just bought a seat wedge which is supposed to raise the hips above the knees to take pressure off the back but Ive not noticed any difference as yet.

Is it worth sticking it out for longer or consider a cobra/recaro replacement? Worryingly I e-mailed a guy who was selling new Cobras on e-bay who said that any replacement seat may make my back worse as a replacement wouldnt be any lower or go further back.

Id be grateful for any advise - I dont want to have to sell the Cup before shes run in!

Cheers,

Stephen

im 63" and i got used to both a 172 cup, and a 182, i had back problems for a couple of days but i got used to it

MaLicE and Lunner both didnt really fit in my 182 seat with comfort on Sunday. Buckets will take you a lot lower and further back.

Im 65" and it took me a couple of months before I got used to it! Got back pain for a couple of weeks at the start too

See how it goes - may be worth trying out one with the Recaro option to see if its any better - if so you could always get an aftermarket one fitted.

Cheers for all the advice guys, I guess Ill grit my teeth and bear the pain for another few weeks before I start to look at aftermarket seats. So many of the buggars to choose from though - any favourites that are easy to fit the 182 Cup, good for back support, ok for lanky sods etc etc?

Cheers,

Stephen

Best idea is to go to somewhere like Demon Tweeks and sit in all there ones.

Just make sure you get one with loads of padding otherwise youll be sitting on a load of jumpers etc like me.

if you near birmigham or stafford feel free to try out one of our cars

both are fitted with cobra seats, the seating position is much lower and much further back than std

give me a ring if you would like to try it out for yourself

61 and a bit and no problems (although my seat is as far back as itll go on the runners).

Might be worth trying the seat slightly higher - yeah the driving position will feel even higher, but it should create extra space for your legs (along the same principal as the seat wedge youre taling about).

Im 6ft 3in.

My head (or my hair anyway) touches the ceiling in my VTS. Besides that, the seats arent great.

When I first got the car I was considering giving it up as for two weeks I suffered terrible back aches.

I was considering after market seats, lumbar cushions etc. In the end I just chucked some fuel in and drove around town each night for an hour.

Pain went away after a month or so after getting used to the seats. Stick with it, its probably just your back getting used to a slightly different position and level of support.

I can drive for hours in the vts without any back pain. I get a bit of neck ache due to the lack of head room though.

Guys,

Im really impressed with the support/advice on this site - thanks a lot. Im based in Stalybridge (east of Manchester). I think Ill stick it out for a few more weeks with the standard seats and bloody wedge (although this makes the driving position far too high). If thats no good Ill either find a supplier who doesnt mind me sat in the corner of their shop for an hour, or take someone up on their kind offer.

Cheers,

Stephen

Pop down to the trackday at Oulton Park on the 13th July - lots of us will be there with all manner of aftermarket seats that you can try out. (You dont need to pay to get in or anything).

Trying out the seats in the shop is ok, but you wont really get any impression about what they might do to the driving position.

I wouldnt use any sort of cushion. I tried that for a while and just found it awkward and a faff everytime I got in and out.

Just stick with the seat on its own for a couple of weeks.

Its like when you go out on a bicycle for the first time in ages, your butt kills the next day. After that its fine.

Let your body adjust to the seat without any added complications (cushions) and Im sure youll start to feel comfier soon enough.

Might be a stupid question, but I assume youve tried adjusting the lumbar support on the seat? Actually dont know if it makes any difference, but I dont think its been mentioned above.

Im 64" standing on a box, but Im quite comfortable in the car as long as I dont stand on boxes while Im driving.
