197 Economy?

Our car was originally run on BP Ultimate but I have now switched back to Sainsbury's Super Unleaded. Our 1st 197 always seamed to love the stuff.

Without a doubt the new gearbox does make a little difference to the economy (approx 1 mpg). On a very long motorway run it will return around 32/33 but not much more.

lol give it a rest. i'll pass thanks. I only know about your car since Steve constantly posts how amazing it is.

What i have an issue with is comments likeyour first post:

''35mpg now i've hit 10k.'' - an innaccurate post tbh. That is not the normal consumption. This thread is for someone considering buying a 197 and wants to know the real figures. Posting the tripe that you do in such a baised fashion is not helpful. I only feel compeeld to post as you and Steve seem to post so much rubbish about the 197 and are clearly to gooey eyed over the 197.

So now we get down to the facts you get 35mpg at 50 - 60 mph. well done.

Go by your own opinion Seb, our car returns 35mpg on some of our journeys so it's an accurate figure along with 27-8mpg on others.

Also perhaps you should check Renaults official figures and you'll find the combined mpg is claimed at 33.

Yeah we are gooey eye over our R27, because it's a nice motor and gets alot of attention.

I'd say you probably feel compelled to post a bit too much on here, perhaps you should get out more.

We not interested in talking to you Seb this is a Clio website for Clio owners who are passionate about their cars.

If you want to insult us and claim we talk "tripe" then that's up to you.

The next conversation I will be having about this is with the chief moderator.

you'll have to pm jon_r then Sarah/Steve.

Sorry i didn't agree with your generous mpg for the 197. I wanted the OP to know some real facts and not get surrounded in crapola.

Heres my 2 pence worth.......urban drving in leeds with the odd thrash now and again = 23-25mpg

No way Lee...dont you know the 197 does at least 30mpg ALL the time..lol

haha I wish! Bought the car from darlington and kept it under 4,000rpm all the way home at about 70mph in 6th and DID get 35mpg,however as soon as you drive the car anywhere near the way it should be the mpg plummets! I did a test a few weeks back changing gear as soon as poss and not been over eager with my right foot.....could not get past 28mpg and that was drving like my mum (shes an instructor!). I then drove as normal, nothing daft, and it dropped back to 24 ish mpg(cant remember exact) within one day. Unless someone does alot of motorway mile and sticks to 70 then they will not hit the quoted 30+ figures.
If I was going to give a mpg figure to someone who was basing a purchase on those very same figures I would tell them
to expect 23-29mpg depending on how they drive. The 30+ figures are achievable but only on long runs.

How are people getting 35mpg?? I get over taken by trucks doing 30mpg!

I'm averaging 27mpg.. its bloody well worth it tho!

Well I have seen ours returning 33 Mpg recently, that was after a very long run on mainly motorway.

I don't think it is our place to discredit what Sarah is saying, she really has no reason to be untruthful and really we don't know the driving style that she adopts.

I do know that my partner does pretty much the same journey to work as her partner and our car return 29/30 and I know he tends to travel at a quicker pace than he does.

no one is discrediting her. her first post was 35mpg after 10k.

we now know it was 35mpg at 50-60mph. that is probably about right.

What is annoying is pointless posts that don't help the OP know the real fuel consumption of the 197.

sarah gets its doing 50-60mph, so you would get overtaken by trucks at that speed.

nah you ain't at all matey, we are just having a bit of banter thats all :)

Surprised you're still here Seb, I'd have thought you'd have been fired and banned by now :D

The thing with fuel consumption, I find, is that some people are so tight, they actually believe it's impressive to get high mpg - to the point where they'll make it up. I think when people ask what kind of fuel consumption they're going to get in any given car, they probably mean by actually driving it, not by resetting the trip counter sitting behind a lorry, going downhill at 30mph in 6th gear for 2 miles.

I believe this is is pretty much what the lovely Sebastian was getting at.

In our case this has nothing to do with being tight as the cost of fuel is not an issue. Our daily commute is mostly a roads with busy traffic so natuarally the mpg reaches 35 after resetting the trip at the START of the journey.

Juding by your comments I get the impression that you probably think that all sports car drivers should drive like nutters everywhere. Pretty irresponsible attitude I would say.

And for your information Seb and Munster my partner (Steve) takes note of his mpg a bit more than the next person as he has to drive carefully due to having 9 points until Feb next year.

Before your start concoting more incisions in what I've written these sp30's were unfortunately picked up doing 120 mile commutes day to day when he worked in Berkshire.

  Mondeo TXS Bardge.
you cant really compair a 1.5 dci clio with a 2.0 197, they are different cars for different things, the 1.5 is for bumbling about doing things cheapely, the 197 is basically about getting there as quick as possible, you might as well compair an evo with smart car.

the tax is like £270 for the 197 comaired to £35 ( is it going to £20 or is that just the mk2)
then the economy the 1p7 gets 30ish, the dci gets 60ish.
insurance, 197, group 15, dci group 4 or something silly low like that.

ive been looking at getting a bigger car (brand new), and yeah for the same money i could get a 197 cup, but on running cost alone the one i'm looking at would be about £400 a year less than my 1.2 clio, where as a 197 cup would be about £500 more.

then there is the residuals which some people on here put above every thing else ive noticed, the DCi will probably out value the 197 in a few years, because of its cheepness. you can notice it now dervs are supprisingly exspensive second hand these days, i mean they have always commanded a premium but the gulf is widening.

but how many miles is your mum gonna deive because if its less than 13k then a 1.2 (poss TCE) would be a better option the insurance will still be dirt but the tax is slighly higher at £120 but the cost of the fuel would compensate for that.

Love the fact that the 120 mile commute is the excuse. I should be banned several times over with that logic.

i think the conclusion is the 197 is rubbish on fuel, but amazing to drive! :D

Well no, not really. I have nil points. However, I don't tootle around looking at my mpg, and if I did, I'd be looking at realistic figures for how I drive, especially if someone were to ask me what mpg I get in my 182. I've seen my trip read as high as 49mpg but that's not my mpg. I believe that's all Seb was trying to point out.
