2002 172 induction kit - which

had a standard K&N 57i with cold air feed in the past, but as the 172 is a bigger/hotter engine...i cant tell which enclosed (if enclosed is best) is best out of the lot.

what seems to be the top recommended, and also the cheapest but good option?

  172 ph1 ASBO SLAYER
piperx viper is ok for the money, hillpower's item looks good and k&n typhoon looks interesting take your pick, don't forget the ITG maxogen.
they are all about the same in my opinoin there is no outstanding winner. i've got a viper, which i'm happy with

the standard airbox with an ITG or piperx panel filter with improved air feeds is also an excellent budget option and probably no worse than anything else

get a good panel filter in the standard airbox and save your money that u would be wasting on a crappy viper and get a proper mod like inlet manifold work that actually gives an improvement.

cant disagree with the sentiment... however if you want sound and throttle response....

keeping the std box seems to reduce throttle response...

Crappy Viper ??

Dont know what your experiences have been but i noticed a marked improvment when i first fitted mine.

Not in my experience. Car sharpened up no end when reverting from Hillpower to std box. Quality IK might release a couple of hp at top end, but IMO will take longer to get there.

I had a viper on for a month and wasn't that impressed with it - but it could've been due to the fact that I didn't spend ages getting the cold air feed pipe in the perfect spot though..

I think they are all up to the job, so long that they are enclosed units. I have a BMC CDA, its fine, i did try the andy idea of not fitting the cold feed to the airbox, looks like it worked better.

I do think that the Maxogen is a lot of money for what it is and does, cheaper ones are still good, and in the end of the day i wouldnt want to send nearly 400 quid on just an airbox, for a bit more you can get an omex ecu!!!

Could not tell any diff with panel and viper when i had my 172 apart from £ 200 viper and & 30 panel .

My car is completely standard apart from a BMC CDA and it has made the car feel more torquey. The sound is just as good as the Viper, but it costs £70 less (and is better made imo).

Dont bother IMHO, 1 or 2bhp max if your lucky......

Where/how much is the BMC CDA? seen a few pics of this and the saxo vts version - if its £70 cheaper than viper it has my vote already :D
