2002 172ff Handbrake cable. How much ? And are they easy to fit ?

Sorry if this ha been asked before.

I was on a hill tonight at some traffic lights waiting for them to turn to green, so i put my handbrake on and the handbrake lever came up further than normal :(

I thought "Oh f**k" my handbrake cable has just broke.

So i managed to park up around the corner and have a look, my passengers side handbrake cable has snapped.

There is still a handbrake cable going to the drivrs side caliper though ;)

Where is the best place to get a new handbrake cable(s) ?

And whats the asking price ?

And one other thing, how easy a job are they to fit ?

I've heard the exhaust has to be dropped :S Is this correct ?

Not sure what the difference is though, can't tell anything obvious from the dialogys parts screen.

Ok cheers mate.

You don't know if there is a fitting guide anywhere on here do ya ?

I've done a search with no such luck :(

Been under mine fiddling with the exhaust today and I wouldn't say it looks too difficult. Remove the headshield above the centre section so you can remove the cables from the handbrake bracket. Then they're just clipped under the body going to each rear wheel looks straightfoward enough.

Ok cheers man, i'll have a nosey the next nice sunny day when it aint peeing it down ;)

And will probably be cursing my self for trying to remove the heatshield lying on my back under my car with it up on axle stands.

Lol :)

And have a go at it after i've got new exhaust heatshield clips as they'll probably break or be useless after removed :( And if there ok and i re-use them there is a chance the shield may rattle.

Get stuck in be a man! You'll be fine. 4 months without a handbrake is impressive lol :D.

Lol i know :)

The side that still has a cable still holds the car on hills though so aint really bothered doing it as i've been too lazy lately

But thought f**k it i'll have to do it.

It needs done.

The torx bolts that hold the heatshield are a b**ch. I had to buy some torx keys that fitted in my torque wrench to get mine off.

I take it they were tight as f**k were they ?

How easy were they to get to ?

Or is it a centre section & decat drop out of the way job ?

They are very tight but farily easy to get to. Not sure how big the standard cat is on a ph2 but it shouldnt get in the way too much.

Yeah will be fine with a decat. Ive got a sportscat which is slightly wider than a decat and i had no probs.

can you just adjust the cables if they havent snaped because i think mine needs tightening. i can push the car with the handbrake on lol

Yeah the adjusting nut is in the same place, remove the shield and you will need a deep socket to tighten it. Some mk2ph1s have an adjusting nut actually on the handbrake lever.

you only need to take the shield off thats over the mid section its really nowhere near the cat/decat. and really 4 months lucky the other sie hasnt gone youd be well and truely up s**t creek!

Any ideas what size of deep socket i'll need ?

And is it one similar to a spark plug one ?

Tell me about it 4 months is a fair time running on one cable, i may have to pull my finger out and fix it pretty soon.

Lol :D

Will do both sides while i'm there though, as knowing my luck i'll do one side and the other side will go :(

Any ideas what bolts/nuts old the heat sheild on ?

Or is it use once clip washer things ?
