Mk4 200t, A4tdi
So after months of deliberation I decided to go against all common sense and instead of making the 10 mile trip to RS tuning (I live on the outskirts of Leeds) I thought i'd save myself a bit of time and money and get an RSTuner by Fastchip.
I'd read good things about the RSTuner and Fastchip seem to have a good rep on most forums here and abroad. The ability to put the car back to standard was also a big plus for me.
Having double checked all connections I first went about saving the current calibration so I had a backup, this was then saved on my laptop and back up drive and also Google Drive. I'm quite thorough with things like this.
After a few days I had the stage 1 map sent to me by Henk. I then waited a few days before again setting aside a full evening so I wasn't rushing myself to uploading the new calibration file. Once again all connections were checked, battery charger attached, laptop plugged in and power settings disabled.
Now came the time which I'd been gearing upto for a while. I uploaded the .cal file (software version checked out ok) and the green status bar began uploading.
All was going well until the status bar reached the very end and all of a sudden a warning dialog popped up on the laptop screen announcing a write failure and all manner of alarms and warning messages on the dashboard came up. Cue sinking feeling in the pit of gut and sweaty palm time.
Panicking I thought i'd then upload the original calibration which seemed to write ok but all I get now is the warning messages about 'Engine Failure Hazard' and the car refusing to start. I'd basically turned my car into a 4 wheeled paper weight.
I daren't touch the thing now and am enlisting the help of a professional mechanic to hopefully solve the issues. Best case scenario is clearing all the fault codes and off we go again. Dread to think about what could be...
Fastchip are claiming that I didn't have my car in Full Ignition and it went into standby during the .cal write but having spent a lot of time reading and practising the method I'm more than sure it was done properly.
Just thought I'd share my experience so far as it could be food for thought to other would be home tuners. Yes I know i'm mental for not going to a professional in the first place and believe me I feel proper dumb. I just want my car back now, the words of another member on here have been ringing in my ears all week 'Just enjoy the car for what it is'.
