36K Service (I know it's been asked in the past)

Wow, I haven't posted on this forum for ages. Not since the Clio took second place to my toy car.

Just phoned the local dealer to book the 36k miles service, £325 - Mill Lane Aldershot included filters/plugs/auxiliary belt.

Could anyone local to Aldershot recommend an independent specialist?

I'd do it myself if I had the time, changing the oil filter last service meant removing the front panel! Damn thing was so tight I couldn't get a good grip.

Thanks I saw them mentioned after doing a search, wondered if there was anywhere closer?

Don't really want to take the day off work for a car service. Unless there's wireless at the garage so I can work from there.

Hi bean,

Im in Camberly and my 172 needs a 36k service soon and aux belt. Can you let me know how you get on with renaultspeed please?

Cheers

Just had a call from the garage, service complete with a couple of advisories.

Exhaust is a crap fit and badly made, touches the body in a number of place. Advised to go back to the manufacturers. It's the KTEC stealth system, I rang them a while ago for fittinng advice. I'll make an appointment to go visit them.

Front brake pads need replacing, I have a set of green stuff already. Will fit when we get a warm spell.

They checked the Auxiliary belt and it's fine, doesn't need changing. If it did, price would be £70 parts plus 3 hours labour. I'll be doing that myself I think.

Price, ummm... forgot to ask but I assume £180 as mentioned by them beforehand.

Will update when I get back from the garage after 5pm.

Just picked the car up, cost £120.

Bit cheaper than they originally quoted, no strip down of rear brakes since it runs pads all round, fuel filter inbuilt so doesn't need changing. No new air filter required since I have a fancy panel filter.

Next year is the big one, cambelt, aux belt and plugs!

I'm going to ring KTEC tomorrow morning, sort out an appintment to check my badly made/fitted stealth system.

Pretty sure the aux belt does want doing at 36k regardless, they seem to have a habit of breaking and taking the cam belt with them if there not changed.

I don't see the point in changing it regardless, if it's not worn.

The original belt was originaly designed to last 72k but they failed that much and sicne when it fails 99% of the time it takes out the camebtl so its new engine time Renault chnaged it to 36k and there been few problems ever since.

IMO never ever least the belt on regardless of condition.

Does this apply to the 1.6 too as my aux belt tensioner (i presume) has started to squeel when I start it after leaving it for a day. Its done 34k and is on a 03 plate, am looking to replace the aux belt, cam belt and all tensioners/idlers over christmas week when i've got the time off. It should be ok until then I would have thought ?

My car is not 5 years old yet and done just over 37k miles.

I had planed on getting the auxuiliary and cambelts done next year, come service time.

Reading about the aux belt taking out the cambelt, I might look into changing it myself sooner.

Is there an online guide for changing the aux belt?

It doesnt matter what the condition is. If you are on 36k miles or over, you need the auxillary belt changing.

If you don't get it changed now, you run the risk of having to replace the entire engine.

Thanks for the update bean. Could you let me know how much their labour rate is per hour pls, then I can figure out how much for aux belt and service.

Cheers

pmsl, on your head be it..$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

How many Clio 172/cups were produced, and how many have experienced auxiliary belt failure?

I'll change the belt myself.

2200 or so were sold.

Enough have had problems the 172 full fat is much the same but with more made and they have problems the original 172 phase 1 had the problems and this was when Renault chnaged there minds about 72k servicing as it wasn't safe finantually to not tlet them be changed. aft all you'll et one or tow theyc an accept but not the amount that keeping 72k servicing would have.

Where can you buy the Aux belt and tensoner? renault only?
You can buy some from some motorpart place belive but why bothered it might be the same part but for the problems it causes if it fails and its not much cheaper why bother.

Cheers Edde, is it purely just a belt and the tensoner or is it other pullies also?

One belt and err one or two tensions from memory.
Cups (without air con) have no tensioner though and belts shorter.
