98 ron sticker behind petrol flap

  Clio RS 172 /Trafic
Higher octane fuel definitely makes the engine run better. I always use V Power or equivalent. The odd time I've used 95 RON fuel the car feels less responsive. I've used it in other standard cars as well and they all run better on 98 to 99 Ron fuel.

Just done a quick calculation based on my local prices and the difference between buying 40L of Tesco 99 compared to 95 is £1.88.

I know what I'd prefer to use........... Cheers for that info that's quite useful, never really thought to even work it out! :D

I run the Audi on whatever comes out of the pumps. If your car is developing flat spots and kangarooing on normal petrol, you've got issues. The car probably has issues as well.

My old Alfa V6 hated a change in octane, I was left with no choice but to use 95 one day and the thing took ages to recalibrate just to even run....... nothing wrong with the car, it was totally down to the fuel... I was actually amazed it made such a difference... :S

But there was nothing wrong with the fuel either, so it must have been the car?

I use 95 no problems at all even used 95 in my 225 Megane with stage 1 98 rom map no knock at all and no knock correction in the ecu , not wasting my money on super if I don't need it

Same here but I'm sure I read chip saying it deteriorates quickly?

I believe it has a high content of ethanol which can "go off" quicker than say Vpower. But the rate mine chomps through fuel its a pretty regulat sight on the forecourt and therefore not much of a problem lmao

Im very wary of fuel now, i've had 2 pistons crack on me through detonation.

If I ever ran BP I wouldn't get as much popping, banging and flaming but V power would.

Also on the Missus VXR, BP feels a bit s**t and doesn't give as many pops and bangs on gear change.

Can't imagine what it would be like on 95!

Higher octane fuel is LESS flammable that lower RON fuels, this means there is more control over the combustion, so the spark always lights the fuel, I believe pinking is when the fuel enters the hot cylinder and detonates before the spark, causing damage and less power, it's not firing when needed.

Slightly better idle, less spluttery on start up and feels a bit more responsive. Even I notice these and I'm pretty cynical about stuff like this.

I don't notice any improvement on MPG however, over my 350 miles a week the car does 35-36mpg no matter what fuel goes in.

All this petrol business is all in your heads

Its pretty much the same if you really knew what was in you fuel you wouldn't put it in your car!

If u think its faster its not.

Well the fact my car works properly with higher ron fuel in begs to differ.

I didnt no all these people had run dyno tests on both fuels so they can prove its all a load of Bs and makes no diffrence. THANKYOU!! Oh wait you havent..!!
I would tend to go with all these car shows / Forums / Mags Having run tests saying it does make a diffrence even fifth gear has done a few now.
And why would car companies suggest using higher ron fuels if it made no difference! ?

I've heard of a few local people putting in cheaper fuel and engine lights coming on. Tank of higher Ron stuff and it clears it.

Mine does it with certain higher ron fuel as well. Had to put Essos higher ron stuff in once as I was running low, engine light came on knock sensor was going nuts. So no longer user that fuel. Never had to put 95 ron in yet.

Only gets Ultimate or Vpower now.

Exact same thing happened to me last week - Esso Super - knock sensor error after 20 miles. Back to my usual juice and no issues!

Question - we use super in a 2 litre Clio as it runs better. This is going to be used in Ferraris, Astons, Lambos etc.

Surely the difference between 95 and 97 from a 1.2 to a 2.0 is as much as shown above, but the above cars are much more specialist in terms of engine, so surely using 97 on them won't be good?

Kinda funny you get so many people knock the more expensive fuel, damn paupers - I'm sure this is the only real reason they knock it.

As I said before, it genuinely made my engine tick over smoother (less lumpy), and I saw a few MPG increase over a week's worth of going to work (testing both side by side).

It funny how people think in their minds that there car is faster/better because they pay more for their fuel!

Next you will be telling CS that powerade makes u run faster!

Another prize idiot! Powerade is crap, lucozade made me run faster

but a can of redbull made me like lightning, that was with my trainers on! I would be even faster in my socks.
