A belt is squeaking but I had aux belt and tensioners done 6 months ago

  ph1 172 Black
So what would it be and how do I fix it. Engine cold, rev it squeak, aircon off.

Once it's warmed up packs it in but does make a slight wooshing sound. Asked mechanic about the sound before it started squeaking and he said it was fine.

I sorta have this as well, my car squeaks first thing for about 10 seconds and it goes.. all belts where done around 6 months ago as well!

Yeah if all belts are pre tensioned why should they squeak. Makes my car sound old and knackered. lol

Someone else must of had this and fixed it. Please don't WD40 lol

  a thirsty one
could it be the idler on the aux belt?

i have the same problem and been quoted about £200 for a new aux belt, new idler and tensioner.

Please dont WD40 ?? :S

Lube the pulleys up by using WD40, or spray grease etc. Mine squeeked a few weeks back, pretty sure it was the bottom front pulley nearest the catch tank on mine

thought wd40 degraded the belt?
i sorted it by having a new belt.mine was the tensioner apparently known to be faulty

Cheers. Went to garage and he said had same problem with a car before. Belt been changed but squeaked. Only way to fix was new belt. It's pretty shocking that. Doesn't the idler come with the aux belt kit?

make sure its not the power steering pump as quite a few seem to be failing, apperently talken powder is good on belts as it dries moisture and grease,i'm not sure on a 172 but i know on willy/16v's the idler is a right game to get at so a lot of people leave them on when doing a cambelt

If its an aftermarket alternater belt they do it all the time, check its tensioned correctly and WD40 it.

I got the kit from Renualt and payed a belt specialist in Notts £120 to do it.

I thought the bearings are sealed so how would wd40 help. Doesn't it destroy grease as well?

Before a took it in the tensioner was sticking and I could hear belt going loose. Not it doesn't do that. What should I do?

My fanbelt was going on my fiesta... so i sprayed a can of WD40 on it and sold it lol :s

The tensioners sticking? I'd get the tensioner and belt changed sharpish before it lets go and locks the crank.

If it is the newish tensioner probably came with too little grease inside from the factory.

It is a genuine Renault one. I paid stealers £50 for it. Tensioner is fine now just the squeak. Please read posts properly.

aux belt kit WAS £50+vat inc tensioner and pully (not NOT the cambelt kit, thats £150+vat), its now rocketed upto £107+vat

So in the kit I got the idler etc. So that should mean that it's fine and it's the bearing on the alternator or water pump yeah?

Local garage suggested just putting a new belt on and see if that does it. What do you think. Anyone fancy having a look at it? Fred maybe?

Ditch the local garage and take it to a proper dealer or specialist. This area aint for f**king about with not to mention the expense it would cost ''just to see'' if its that as if theyve got it wrong your bill will end up being 2x aux belt fittings at 400 + notes

Hi Fred. I'm off end of March. Think maybe could pop round and get car sorted properly. Damn Bosch Super 4 spark plugs playing up now. Back firing. Took them out and put them back in and it's ok. Just got engine light stuck on!

Also think my rocker cover is leaking cause bit of oil on top of plugs. Is that easy to fix?

  M2 Competition
Mine does this after its cam/ aux belt change. Makes a whoosing sound at high revs (very noticeable in 1st gear) and was told that once the belt wore in it would go... that was 1000 miles ago.

Doesnt squeak though.

Is it gonna blow up, or can i continue to drive with the stereo up so i cant hear it... ?

  Lionel Richie
it sounds like maybe they've cocked up, or you've got a dodgy tensioner/idler (possible, but rare if new)

  M2 Competition
They adjusted the tension loads (was done professionally by a well known renault tuner) and it didnt make the noise before i had the belt changed...

any suggestions fred?

  Lionel Richie
if the belt is too tight it puts strain on the pullies and can make a noise, if the belt is a tiny bit too loose it can make a whiring noise coming down the revs

if the belt is really loose it'll flap about and smack the cam cover (but not always skip teeth)

  ph1 172 Black
So how do you adjust tension? Can I get mechanic to do it or will you do it if I pop round end of March.

I'm in Derbyshire so can pop up but don't really wanna leave my car cause of getting back. I think it makes the noise as the revs drop. I just thought the tensioner did all the work but obviously not.

Rocker cover thing as well. I did a search and it looked an easyier job. Were you thinking of taking the whole lot to bits. I've never had to top up oil in last year and done 6k. Just noticed some on plugs.

Hillpower isn't that close to me. Not much closer than you. I wanted Nick to do it when I had it done but he was busy and the tensioner was sticking and I felt I need it doing quick cause the belt would go from tight to flapping so I paid a place in Notts. Some belt specialist.

They said the whine was the belt bedding in but from what you've said they are wrong. Most seem to say it's auto tension so there is nothing you can do.

All parts were genuine Renualt so I'm stuck now since the kit has doubled in price and yet I don't want to take out came belt with a poorly fitted kit. Only do 4k since fitting so surely it can't be fooked.

So what should I do?

  ph1 172 Black
Well MOT today so I'm gonna get them to look at it. Whine is when revs are below 2000. If that doesn't work I'll have to get on phone to Nick.

My 172 Cup Squeaks for approx 1 second on startup?
is this due to the cold damp weather atm?
or is something up?
Aux belt change is due in 6k miles.

  ph1 172 Black
Mine squeaks for a bit longer but it's the whistling whine that does me. I think it may be too tight. Was hoping Fred would tell me how to adjust the pre tensioner but he didn't.

There must be some thing I can do. Gonna give it till end of week. Mechanic said he'd try to look tomorrow but after that unless someone can help it looks like wasting more money on a problem that I've chucked £180 and going to Hill power.
