A little bit worried about what police have told me!

After being pulled today in my little clio (and been given 2 £30 fines, for HID lamps and excessive noise) the local plod, told me that as of next year all cars would fail the MOT on

Aftermarket alloys
Aftermarket stereos
Aftermarket lamps

Pretty much anything aftermarket (which in essence if this is true, my local alloy center would be out of business).. Then I found this

http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/car-news/consumer-news/60092/modified-cars-could-face-mot-fail

Anyone have any idea if this is true or not? Because if it is, I am well are truely f***ed

The only one that might happen is the lights, if a hid kit has been fitted to a headlamp without a projector, that is still in the balance though.

as for the others just lol what a pleb.

Never say never. I wouldn't be in the least bit surprised if this kind of legislation does eventually happen.

Think of the benefits: a massive reduction in Barry'd up carvery wagons on the roads.

Ah but surely a police car would be illegal if it didn't come with lights from the factory?

Aside from the fact they'll make a special exception for police cars...

Lol. Wouldnt be surprised if alot of things did become illegal. Loud exhausts etc.. but then again a cd player is a bit OTT

HID kits are set to become illegal if they ever bring out the new MOT regulations but if the car has projector lenses or if there's a beam pattern it's not going to be an issue.

They should spend more money on improving driver education IMO. As most see it as a birth right rather than the privilege it really is.

There are changes in the pipeline that will effect new cars, but they can't force new laws onto old cars. Aftermarket hid are essentially already illegal Afaik as they dont give quite the same pattern but just a lot of testers let it go so it will probably get clamped down upon.

A lot of people don't realise though how many modified cars already break the rules. My old XE corsa on coilovers for example, to the letter of the CURRENT legislation should have been put through an Individual vehicle assessment not just an MOT, but no one does this at the moment.

MOT is only there to check condition of parts not specification of parts. It's a grey area as when you start changing parts you are essentially invalidating the type approval for that vehicle.

Wonder what the cops who stopped you would think of my nova which is mot'd and road legal and cause the major alterations were done pre 98 there is nothing wrong with it legally I'm reliably informed.

MOT fail for no parcel shelf-?

Flol

TBH cars like my Nova show why we should have a TUV style approval system over here like they have in germany, it is a bit daft that there are cars out there made of random bits of other cars by some bloke in his garage etc, makes a mockery of the whole type approval system.

Trouble is, although mine is fairly obvious, how can you expect a 20 year old MOT tester to have the first clue about what was standard specification for a 22 year old car that was made before he was even born? And if he doesnt know, how can he fail or pass it meaningfully if they do try a "no modifications" rule?

LOL that turbo's bigger than your head.

EDIT: Just realised that sounds like a dig. It wasn't.

You should have said "jesus christ how did you manage to get something that big that pumps out that amount of hot air into the engine bay?"
And then said "edit, the turbo I mean, not your head" ;)

You can see the size of it better here:

FLOL at the CD comparison.

What's the lag on one of those? Twenty minutes?

Lag isnt bad TBH once in the boost threshold, but it doesnt spool properly till 4500rpm or so.
And TBH it pulled well enough off boost that in normal driving you didnt ever need the turbo, was only if you wanted to go loopy quick, because of all the work done to the engine to make it so efficient it still pulled like an XE nova does before it came on boost in the first place, ie about the same performance a 172 anyway.
Plus it revved to 8500rpm as it was on solid lifters, steel rods, forged pistons, uprated valves etc, so it meant that although boost didnt happen to 4500rpm, that still gave you a very useful 8500rpm window.

Its worse on the new engine, as I dont have as many revs available now, but im planning on adding a supercharger this winter to bring the turbo on a bit sooner.

as much as i dont beleive its right if something like this happened, just another rule we need to live by, as if there isnt enough already. But the manufacturers would eventually react to it and we would get a much bigger and better choice of factory options to compensate!

I didn't really need that detail much but I should have expected it ;)

Must be like being hit from behind by dk when it starts boosting.

Genuine question for the OP, were you driving like a total weapon or hanging about in a car park? Did you get out the car with a "what blud" kind of attitude?

I only ask as I ran a seriously modified ph1 and was pulled twice by traffic, never did I get a mention on any issues. At all. Be polite, be understanding, even have a laugh if you can. Just be a decent, grown up human being and 99% of the time you'll be fine,

Pulled for no reason IIRC?

Had that in my sierra, was drifting round a roundabout in the town centre on a busy saturday night many years to impress the chav skirts in the nightclub queue and just after I finished a copper pulled me for no reason and started asking me lots of questions, I think he was obviously a bad cop that picks on people.

same here, i was only getting air on the speed bumps outside my local primary school in a saxo vts and the copper just pulled me for nothing

I can't see anything like that being enforced on cars already on the road (most will probably not have access to factory bits any longer) but maybe rolled out against brand new cars as the DRLs where. That's the only way I can ever see it happening.

I can't see it happening though. A big sector of the market (and gov income from that market) would disappear.
