little update, my strut top plates came
the other day i removed the rear beam, leaving just the tank.
bit more stripped from the bay
inside slowly getting bits removed
and previously i said id bought a jp4 engine to go in well i got that and then the week after i ended up buying a high comp lump with wossner pistons ph4 newman cams and some headwork, so with that id hope for 170-180 brake maybe even more?
im also still waiting for bits from 106parts, i ordered them ages ago and ive since emailed them but not heard anything.

wishbone bushes
some manky looking arb bushes
vibra technic wishbone mounts
some hi specs
test fitted my brake line, may need some angled banjos or would these be ok?
i stripped the steering rack down, assembled
started by pulling the rubber bush off and taking the circlip out
then the bolt that needed abit of a bodge tool to remove, fairly straight forward and doing abit of reading this is what adjusts the feel of the rack so marked the rack so i know where it bolts back up to.
then i pulled the 3 pressed bits out and knocked this metal ring down to reveal a metal ring that keeps the rack secure and pulled that off, a little tricky.
after that its a case of carefully knocking the pinion out, here it all is seperated.

after this lot it was onto the shell, firstly i needed to remove the tank but it was half full so needed the petrol out (vpower of course) of the tank and into the new gti daily. i got this contraption from my mate.
got the tank out, nice and easy as id done it at christmas.
checking the shell out underneath and it should be fairly straight forward, i just need to get another engine stand and ill use them for a spit so i can get the shell rotated so i can do a decent job.
i got the shifter sorted and out the engine bay, also got the pedal box off so thats everything from the inside.
engine bay is now ready for some sanding back and welding, this ill get it seam welded whilst im putting the strut top reinforcement plates on.
and thats as far as ive got. going to get the fuel system sorted next ive been saying that for months tho.

yesterday i went and picked another engine stand up went for the more expensive 550kg stand this time. maybe not my wisest choice as its slightly taller but i should be able to get round the problem.
i also picked some box section steel up and got the two bits bolted to the shell.
bolted to the rear. now this is what others have done but it doesn't seem very stiff? well obviously not as stiff as the front. i guess it'll be ok when on the stand tho

a nut was tacked inside the new tube before welding to the jig,
so that the metal tube is tight inside the chassis leg,
using existing factory holes in the rear leg the nut and bolt work well

I think you'll be fine the way you've bolted it - the back of the the 106 without anything on it weighs nothing. I've picked a back half up and put it on the back of a trailer on my own before lol

i got the car on the spit yesterday, hard work getting it right but its up and on. i had to take the wheels off the front of the front stand and stick a couple slabs under the rear to level it out.
quite low to the ground. cleared some stones out so theres plenty of room now.
the underside was very tidy it had been undersealed before so there was no real rust to take back
very tiring and filthy work
the light started to go so stuck some etch primer on to keep the rust away
i had also previously found some tasty rust on the rear arch. shouldn't be a problem for the guy i have doing my welding as he works with old vw's daily.
it was hidden by aload of filler
id also had some parts turn up yesterday, a battery terminal for the bulkhead.
some brembo disks
quite low to the ground. cleared some stones out so theres plenty of room now.

yesterday i finally managed to get the middle part of the underside etch primered and then undersealed. 2 days of sanding grinding bleading and swearing just for 20 mins of the fun stuff painting.
still lots more to do.
and today the fancy stuff arrived my sytec filter with dash 6 fittings
bosch 044 external fuel pump with dash 8 in and dash 6 out
the torques fittings 9 dash 6 straight, 3 dash 6 90 degree, 2 dash 8, 2 bulkhead fittings.

bulkhead fittings with the 4 dash 6 fittings attached
all the bits together, including the one meter of dash 8 teflon lined braided fuel line.

still lots more to do.

As my housemate was away on holiday it meant i couldn't flip the car over to continue with the underside so today on my day off i started on the engine bay, didn't get too long just a few hours but it was enough to find plenty of rust more filler and fiberglass 
i wanted to do something different with the gearbox mount so gave it a trim as it was pretty ugly i plan to stick a sheet of metal with the same holes etc over whats left and weld round it.
heres the rust found inside the arch

heres how it ended up obviously left it with some etch primer on
had some more fuel line turn up, goodrich stuff teflon lined.
also broke my grinder is it wrong that im excited to buy a new one?

did some more grinding sanding fileing back today, my ears are ringing i purchased a new grinder and enjoyed using it a little too much.
made a start on the underside of the arch. should be straight forward sorting the rust in these areas. finished it off with some etch primer again.

started the more serious side of the body work today, cutting welding and replacing rusty panels.
it started slowly and seemed to stay that way but these things where never going to fly by especially making panels from scratch.
i hated the inner wings too many holes and uneven surfaces. so they had to go.
marked out what we wanted rid of and made the panels up before cutting it out.
panels made up
section cut out, more was taken out to allow the panel to properly fit
the made up panel before fitting.
the panel fitted, theres still more welding required on this but we got it on and stuck some primer on to keep it rust free overnight.
so far that had taken us 4 hours i had started to tidy the drivers side of the engine bay up ready for the other panel... more to come tomorrow.
