Advise on aux belt/cambelt and future 428 cams

My 55 182 is on 54k miles. Just found out its never had a belt replaced and ive just noticed a belt squeal at cold start for a min. Then fine.

The dephaser isnt rattling yet, and i want some 428 cams.

Question is, is it worth replacing aux belt now? As later this year i want to buy some 428 cams along with the dephaser change, belts etc.

Jesus, that's nearly due its second cambelt and would be past its third aux belt change... YOU NEED TO GET THAT SORTED ASAP. Don't waste your money on 428 cams either as they really aren't a great cam given the others on the market. Don't scrimp on not getting a dephaser pulley fitted whilst getting the cambelt done either, as it'll only start rattling once you've changed the belts...

If you don't take this advice, i'll offer you £500 when the belt shreds itself and takes the engine with it.

  Mint 1*2's for sale-
Make sure you get the full aux belt kit- not just the belt. The tensioners are prone to seizing up-

So budget around £600 with dephaser & then cams on top if req.

What you on about Nick, the cambelt isnt due till 72k correct me if im wrong. Looking here http://www.k-tecracing.com/service_grid.asp?appid=2&model=Petrol models. K tec's service schedule

Yes I will correct you. If you believe a K-Tec service schedule then you're even more stupid than I thought.

Everything you needed to know in this thread regarding servicing is in the service book Renault give you with the car. It amazes me people rarely read these things...

421's with aftermarket ECU or 438's standard ECU.

You don't need an aftermarket ECU for 421's. Essentially 438's are the same as 421's just timed differently.

If you raise the idle by a couple of 100rpm 421's idle and run fine on OEM management (obviously with a remap to suit).

Timing belt is 72k miles or 5yrs.

Aux belt kit is 36k or 3yrs.

Those figures are the limit. I've seen aux belts / tensioners fail before that time.

Get the belts replaced ASAP, you are driving a ticking bomb....

I know a few people that have run 421's with the standard ECU, but I personally wouldn't.

take nicks advice... the mileage is not the problem.. its how old the belt is..(9 years, plus how long the belt was manufactured ,before it went on the car).could be 10 years old... if you get it done ,its done for 36000 miles/ 5 years.. if your going to keep the car ,its not a waste.. I know its a rip off.. ..

What about using with stock pistons and springs? Stop teasing me with things i cannot buy. :banghead:

You don't need to change pistons or springs for the cams. He is saying the cam profile is the same, it's just how it is timed up according to the TDC (top dead centre) of the piston as to how it's power characteristics will be.

look on the traders section on here under west Renault.. he has put a price list up on all the belts.. .then maybe ask birchdown how much to fit them

Another stupid comment.

Any decent garage wouldn't possibly fit parts you have supplied and warrant them.

It wouldn't be any cheaper you buying the parts and a specialist fitting them.
