air filter what is the best move

  Fiesta ST Stage 3

Hi all am a new member and just got my 172 mk 1 last sat. Very Very happy with it and just need a bit of info on air filters.

What would be the best thing to do a pannal filter or a viper . I will not be doing any other mods than an air filter so would be gratefull for opinions and advice on this. I see on mk 1 that there is two air pipes going of from the round air box and would a viper be more beneficial or would a green hi flow panel filter be best not intrested in noise just a bit ex power.

Thanks allllllll

I would stick with a simple replacement if your not intending to do anything else.

A foam based oiled filter will last you a lifetime and is easier to maintain than a cotton one.

But i thought that the cotton ones were more free flowing ive seen one on bb that looks like a green one for about £ 40 - %5 .

So you think that a viper would be a wast of money without maby a chip or ecu re map i can see why you say go for a replacement filter over a viper as your getting lots more air but no more full to mix with it. With the viper.

ive also read that, however the foam ones seem to handle dirt load better, so after a certain point the foam will be the better flowing one

really though there wont be much in it...........if anything really......

ive got a BMC CDA and id recommend it to anyone

lol, yea, BRUNs had a few other things done.

THe only reason i dont reccomend and IK or sealed IK is because you mentioned you dont want to bother with anything such as a remap. And if you stuck a sealed IK on and found out you needed a remap, as running lean is potentially very dangerous, im not sure you woudl jump up and do it, or even check.

Cotton type filters dont handle dirt at all well. Primary reason they arent used in off road type racing of any sort.

I no i will sound like a right t*t but what is running lean

am not a complete novice around a car but have not got a clue what this means ??????????

RUnning lean refers to teh A/F ratio where it drops to a condition where the ratio of air to fuel particles is too high. i.e. there is too much air, the burn can be too rapid, hot etc etc.

The value will change in each engine, but typically on newer cars which run a closed loop system for emissions and cat operation, its above 15:1 as soichiometric is 14.7:1 on all vehicles running closed loop.

itll be the easiest, the cheapest and the safest

and with the cost being so low, if your not happy you can try the more expensive route at a later date
