All 4 mounts changed, now getting a terrible judder/vibration when turning left.

  E92 M3,172 track car
I've changed all four mounts. The top mount and upper gearbox mount are Kangoo TD items, the lower gearbox mount is from K-Tec and the dog-bone is a Powerflex.

Now when I steer left even at low speed and on shallow corners, it feels as if the right front wheel is tucking under the car, the judder is atrocious.

In terms of what I think the culprits may be:
We struggled to get the upper gearbox mount off and ended up removing the whole threaded rod. Should the nut on the top of this be really tight? It was a struggle without ripping the mount.

When I did the lower gearbox mount, as the old mount was so soft, I pulled the engine forwards before tightening.

When fitting the upper mount, I removed the weight from below the mount as it seemed like dead weight.

I still get really bad resonating/vibrating when accelerating hard as well.

Do any of these things sound like the problem and what would you suggest I try next?

> the threaded rod is also held up with a nut on its underside (which should be tight - they work loose and cause vibration). both top and bottom nuts should be fairly tight. could use a nylock nut for the bottom one and thread lock it on, as they're a pain if they work loose regularly

When I did the lower gearbox mount, as the old mount was so soft, I pulled the engine forwards before tightening.

> is this the little square(ish) block? it's just a support/packing piece; agree that it seems quite soft

> not sure what you mean - have you removed something from the car?

i'd start by checking the lower nut on the upper gearbix mount first, and then go on to slacken all of the mounts and shift the powerplant about, to see if you can't get it to sit more squarely - from face value, vibrations are probably either as a result of missing this nut, or of misalignment of powerplant

good luck for the mo

Courtesy of Mr Burp, this is what I removed:
Not a massive update but quite a nice weight saving.

Under the engine mount is a useless lump of iron

Or shall i say, there was.........

Hows this then?

Not as heavy as the one on a 182, that is a massive 6kgs!!!

ah, right. don't have one of those on mine (may be they were taken off the Cups? what is it anyway?)

presumably it can't be the problem if others don't have them/have removed them without experiencing issues

Not sure mate, some kind of counter balance/weight. Seems completely pointless but it was the only change I made other than the mounts so thought it may be relevant.

So the nut on the upper gearbox mount should/will spin when using a ratchet and spanner or should there be no movement at all?

Thanks

the spindle shouldn't spin as you tighten the nut on the upper gearbox mount. when you said you removed the spindle, did you have to undo a nut from underneath to get it off?

Yep, I had to split the top nut to get it off. Rebuilt off the car with the new mount and refitted. I then held the nut under the car while my Old Boy tightened from the top.

The spindle still span slightly under the ratchet so we double checked and he has said any tighter would rip the mount.

hmm..
can only think that the bottom nut's not tight enough if you can turn the spindle whilst tightening the top nut. it's an irritating design

hang on a minute - are you saying that you assembled the mount onto the spindle, then screwed it into the lower nut? there's a flat on the spindle that you use to tighten it into the lower nut - then you fit the mount ontop

That's the one.

Undid bottom nut, removed spindle and mount as one, split the top nut, removed the old mount, refitted the new one ( I tried to locate on the collar half way up the shaft), loosely fitted the top nut and refitted the hole unit then tightened from the top & bottom.

So I need to Fit the spindle, tighten the lower nut then rebuild the mount on top?

^that's it. guessing that you've not been able to fully tighten the spindle into the bottom nut as the mount was in place. hopefully that'll solve things, as a loose spindle will cause vibration

Magic. Thanks for the help. I'll give it a crack this week and report back on the Kangoo mounts.

look forward to it :)

Put the thread title in caps lock as it could be a monumental day for CSers
