Alternator died and battery is reading 19volts?! Any ideas

  megane 285 sport
just because a battery reads ok voltage doeasnt mean the batterys ok, its the ampage that you need. if youve got no ampage in the battery then its buggered.

a new or fully charged batt reads 12.50/13.00 the average alternator only puts out 14.3 so it should never go that high do yourself a favour and buy a new batt

yea is the voltmeter calibrated cos that will give u a false reading on it but the battery might still be shot!

a battery is actually 13.2 volts
contarry to what people think
but they should run at a minimum of 12 volts
sayin that i havent seen one at 18 volts
ill ask the brains tommorow ;)

Probably your regulator internal in your alternator, causing your battery to overcharge, deffinately can overcharge to 19 volts, if your battery is being overcharged look for your battery becoming warped and smelling. Could do with testing the voltage when driving see how the voltage changes.Just my opinion.

if the alternator is over charging you will have electrical issues with the car, mine spiked 16.2v every now and again, my headlamps would go off then on and all my dash lights would flicker.

Turns out my voltmeter was reading wrong!

I measured my mates car which was 12v and 14v with engine on. The checked my battery and it was 8.2v In conclusion, im thinking a new alternator shoudl sort it!

A battery with only 8.2v wouldnt be enough to power any electrics right?
