I've not really got a number in mind for the weight as I don't want to be disappointed, but I'm going to try and lighten it in every way I can, while still keeping it looking and functioning like a car (to an extent).
After feeling how light the tailgate is we are deifinatly going to get fibre glass doors and plastic windows for it, but as we're on a tight budget this will mean it'll all take longer to get the money together get the car done.

We have finally managed to find a generator shop that accepts buttons as payment:

So hopfully we should finally be able to make some progress on the car itself over the next few weekends and try to get the project back on track!

think I recall this being mentioned before..

the rev counter on the 16v clocks only reads half what it should do, yeh?

is it exactly half? (due to 2 coil packs?)

The car hasn't been running for ages but as far as i can remember yes it does, and it should really thinking about it, as 1 coil will spark 4 times per revolution and 2 coils will spark twice each every revolution.
We can't think of a way of getting a signal from both coils without bridging them together causing running problems.
I have seen microprocessor controlled rev counters which would do the job, but they're a lot of money and we've got much more to do before thats an issue

I've pulled apart a spare set of clocks, an I'm reasonably confident I can easily alter them to read double the rpm...

I'll let you know :D

well im doing this project while i can, ie i dont have a mortgage or anything, only outgoings are car insurance, board to rents and petrol etc (i finished paying off the 106 last year)

me and the gf are looking to rent a house in may after we have been on holiday, but she knows the car isnt getting sold just to fund moving out, and the new house needs either 2 parking spaces or a long drive/garage :D

got to get priorities right  :approve:

Right, ok.
Sorry for the lack of updates but not a lot has been happening recently until, we decided to book this week off to hit it hard and get on with it!
Story so far from saturday morning is as follows:
First thing we did was drag it out the garage, have a bit of a tidy up and assess the situation.

02022008389.jpg

02022008390.jpg

02022008391.jpg

We removed the doors and tailgate for sale, which went that day, which free'd up a vast amount of room.
Next thing we did was start drilling out all the brackets we no longer need as we're not running... anything really.

09022008402.jpg

09022008403.jpg

09022008404.jpg

09022008406.jpg

Unfortunatly this left us with a few holes in the floor (drilling the spot welds out thick metal to thin)
Sunday morning came round and we had a very early start, 6:30 to be exact! You can see the frost on all the cars, it wasn't plesent.

10022008411.jpg

We got up (stinking hangover), went down to the garage and pushed the car back to the house.
Continued to drill off all the bracket we don't need, including the origonal seat rounts.

09022008407.jpg

09022008409.jpg

10022008413.jpg

Once all that was done we finished off box sectioning the roll cage and grinding back everything to make it look tidy (we still have some tidying to do)

11022008426.jpg

11022008430.jpg

11022008432.jpg

12022008438.jpg

12022008439.jpg

Next thing was to mount the seat (thanks holister for the picture).
We measured, measured and measured some more before starting to make sure the seats were in the correct postion as they won't be adjustable.

12022008448.jpg

12022008449.jpg

We even compaired to the seating postition in the Nissan.

12022008450.jpg

We came up with some random ideas to try and make sure everything was true.

12022008451.jpg

We then welded strengthening plates into the sills and tunnel, but ran out of welding gas, so began to shape the bar the seat will mount to before we ran out of light and didn't want to annoy the neighbours.

12022008453.jpg

12022008454.jpg

12022008456.jpg

As for the affording the whole project, we are absoluty ploughing everything into this car. We cartainly are not rich boys, we've completely given up on having a social life. We're doing the whole project in a rented council garage, or in the front garden of the house i rent a room in.
If we had the money we'd kill for a workshop, or even just a garage with power, it just depends how much you're willing to sacrevise to get the car you want.

really are going to some lengths on the weight stripping front!

nice to see the progress though! :D

  Golf GTi Mk2
Good progress team, really nice to pop round and see it in the flesh tonight guys, its really coming along. Its all the little bits you're doing now that will make a difference at the finsh.
KUTGW.

  Some of a Clio 1.8 16v
Made a bit more progress today but moo left his phone lead at home so we can't post any pictures. Tune in tomorrow for more updates:)

  a blue one
Heya beanie - looking good. What idea's are you doing for the outside? No big silly vents/sideskirts, arches?? Love the pic of moo turning his back on it!

  Some of a Clio 1.8 16v
More progress from today and yesterday, although disappointingly it doesn't look vastly different from before, but its all going to come together soon (we hope)
We started off by shaping both the front seat mounting tubes to the plates on the sills and tunnel, making sure at every step everything was straight from every angle. But we were unable to attach them oweing to a lack of welding gas.

13022008457.jpg

13022008458.jpg

13022008459.jpg

So we decided to head home and check for any deliveries. As luck would have it under the door mate we found the tailgate hinges (thanks Mattbrown from Clio valver)!

13022008460.jpg

We then set about fitting the tailgate to the car. Amaizingly it fits pretty well, just needing adjustment to the top hinge mounts to bring the gap in to the roof.

13022008461.jpg

13022008464.jpg

13022008466.jpg

13022008472.jpg

This morning we managed to get hold of some welding gas so straight off we welded in the seat mounting bars, again making sure everything was straight and level.

14022008485.jpg

Once these were in we trial mounted the seats to make sure they weren't on the piss, and OH MY they look awesome!

14022008476.jpg

14022008477.jpg

14022008478.jpg

14022008481.jpg

After a bit of an accident by Moo causing our last remaining peice of roll cage tubing (till tomorrow hopfully) to end up being too short for the rear seat mount we set about shaping the o/s half the harness bar.

14022008484.jpg

What a job this turned out to be, so may angles of tube butting up against tube does make things complicated, but we're very happy with the results.

14022008487.jpg

14022008488.jpg

14022008489.jpg

14022008490.jpg

More updates tomorrow or in the weekend dependent on went the roll cage tubing and sheet metal arrives

  Some of a Clio 1.8 16v
Not much progress made today, but the rest of roll cage tubing turned up so we were able to finish off a few things.
We manage to shape and fit the harness bar. It was a real mission to shape but we are rather impressed with the outcome.

15022008494.jpg

15022008493.jpg

We also managed to finish off the drivers seat mount by fitting the rear mounting bar.
Once we'd done this we'd truely had enough of shaping the end of tubing so decided to call it a day.

15022008497.jpg

15022008496.jpg

All that leaves us to get done what we wanted to this week is fit the passenger seat rear mounting bar, and make the plates to pin the tailgate down with, but we need the metal sheet to turn up.
The feet to bolt the seats to the seat mounting bars will turn up on Tuesday, so all is good!
Once all this is done, we need to save up to order the battery relocation kit, doors and windows, trial fit them, strip the car bear, then its off to paint! Exciting!

  C63 AMG, F430 & 172
looks fantastic! top bombing!

i wish i had put that harness bar in :(

thats a job for the summer :D

That thread is ace, spent a while reading it all the way through! Great work guys. Keep it up, dedication is the key and you seem to have it in bucket loads.

High 5.

  182 & Mk1 Valver
Wow just read from the start. Great work guys, cant wait to see how it looks when is finished.

Blown up 182 & Mondeo TDI
Getting there! Just read this and will deffo like to see more as it moves towards completion

  Some of a Clio 1.8 16v
We're having it painted white inside and out as it's a motorsport style car but we're keeping the roof, bonnet, scuttle and rear spoiler in bare carbon fibre.

Dj roberts the bonnet isn't gonna fit as it gets much thicker where the inlet manifold is now so i've gotta cut and rebrace some of the fibre glass frame which is a bit nerve wracking as it's best part of 500quids worth of bonnet:dead:

Twin Turbo Merc & a Polo
Top stuff sexy I do believe it will be awesome, seen some bits that you forgot to tell me about when i can to over-like that your gonna have to cut thet bonnet!!!!
Thanks again for coming and fixing the wolop give it 2 weeks and it will be back to this:cool: I love you MOOO

Another progress report from the weekend.
We have managed to finish off the seat mountings, by welding i the last of the tubes on the passenger side and welding the feet onto the tubing with captive nuts.
Huge thanks to James (James172Cup) for haveing the feet lazer cut for us.

24022008521.jpg

24022008519.jpg

24022008507.jpg

We have also fitted some plates in the boot shut and finished off pinning the tailgate down. It doesn't fit the best in the world but its fine for a track car.

24022008501.jpg

24022008502.jpg

24022008513.jpg

24022008512.jpg

And then last of all we fitted the ecu and crash switch mounts all with captive bols. Its all looking pretty good, we've stil got lots to do like coolant header tank bracket and do some tidying but it is coming along

24022008530.jpg

24022008529.jpg

Thanks for looking

looking good dude,

loving the seat mounts!

how long untill its done then?

The seat mounts were pretty tough going but we're pleased with the results!
As for a delivery date, err... we're sort of hoping for around my birthday in August. But every time we're brave enough to assess what we've got left to do the list seems almost endless!
Hows your motor coming along? Since they locked your thread I've been meaning to pm you about how its coming along!

  Golf GTi Mk2
I'm impressed with your seat mounts too ;)

Its looking good, seems a shame to get everything fitted how you want it only to strip it to bare bodyshell, awesome in every sense :)

  Some of a Clio 1.8 16v
Not much progress this weekend, not even sure if its worth an update really but here we are. First of all our carbon fibre scuttle panel arrived and its beautiful!

02032008547.jpg

We made a bracket and fitted the coolant header tank. We're both very pleased with how it all looks.

01032008541.jpg

01032008542.jpg

We also plated the holes in the 'A pillar' for the wiring for the door and the door pin switch, then started to filler them but had to leave sanding it down as I was busy.

02032008549.jpg

02032008550.jpg

Not sure what more pogress we'll be doing as we've got to try and pay some depts off.
