Another Clio 172 Cup Road/Track

  Cup In bits
Sorry about the essay content to start with, it will become more brief.

I thought I would start a small progress thread to keep track of ongoings of my new run around.

I am building another Cup just now to go racing with. After driving my race build car I was well impressed with the Clio's and thought I might have one in the future for some road fun. I sold my Corsa VXR to make way for a tow car/van and trailer purchase. I am in no rush to get a tow vehicle yet so I was left without a car for using day to day, cue the purchase of my second cup.

I was lucky and a well priced trailer came up down in Carlisle, not a million miles away for me to travel given that most were down the south of England. The same week I placed the deposit on the trailer a cheap Cup came up for sale on here that needed some work but was perfect for my needs, I prefer doing repairs myself knowing that they 'were' done and done right. The car just happened to be in Carlisle too and only 4 miles apart.

I travelled down to Carlisle on the 21st Feb and picked up the trailer then headed over to Russ Rallye's house to pick up the cup. The car seemed alright from the viewing ( was dark by this point) decided to take it after a short drive and a going round with a torch. The road test was 'interesting' to say the least, it pulled all over the road and there was a few oil leaks that will need looking at but all things that can be fixed. Some badly painted parts that i'll sort too. I also picked up a full 172 interior from Dannyboom on the way down as I never liked the basic spec of the Cup's interior.

I returned home 13hours after leaving, most time spent on the motorway so I was totalled, the next day I got it up on some stands and came up with a list of known parts and some unknown parts that would need looking at as well as some nice touches to tighten it up and improve what is there already.

I will do a final spec list when I get round to doing the work but so far I have ordered pretty much everything to rebuild the suspension and steering, replacing the cambelt & aux, full service inc all oils and fluids, all exhaust mountings & gaskets, pretty much every seal on the engine bar the head gasket and stem seals, new tyres, re surfaced front and back disks, 197/225 Brembo 4 pots and ds2500 pads, braided hoses, spacers, dog bone mount( already fitted) full new interior and omp base frames, seats and harnesses will be borrowed from my race car for just now, all new dash strips and gearknob.

Like I say I will do a full write up when parts go on, I HOPE to do everything starting this weekend and have it rebuilt and M.O.T'd in time for me going on holiday the Saturday after this coming weekend.

A few photos that Russ Rallye done for sale thread and a couple of poor iFails I took. I will update with pictures of everything when I get going.

Small update.

Home now so got a start on stripping down the car today ready for all its new parts and mods. I decided to start at the front removing the subframe, rack, suspension etc. It turned out that the frame dropped was all I was going to get done at the end of play. The car put up a big fight, I had 5 subframe strengthener plate bolts break and one of the subframe bolts, the rack heat shield captive nuts spun making it impossible to remove and get to pas hoses, union's rotted solid on pas hoses etc etc.

I got there in the end after buying a blowtorch to heat up pas uninos and 6 hours of crawling on my back shouting bad words. I'm a bit disheartened too as I done a compression test before the strip down and the results wasn't great, 3&4 were 210psi, 2 was 190psi and 1 was down at 160 but did go up with cranking for a bit. So it turns out the engine isn't the healthiest about but it goes like .......off a shovel so I'll persevere for just now and if it gets any worse I'll swap it out.

Safe to say I hate Renault Clio's just now, the only thing encouraging me is some of the nice bits I have to fit. I will fit my 197/225 4 pots that was surplus on my race build, got a set of 16" td pro race 1.2's in anthracite coming and got a cheap rear ARB and some spacers so should look good and go well......hopefully.

How it was at the end of play tonight.

Opinions on pro race 1.2's in anthracite??? Picture below is 15" on someone's car on here I think, I'll be getting 16" and have a choice on the colour they go, I'm stuck between anthracite and silver (never seen them before in silver)

I had them in anthracite, in a 15 too! The colour itself is cracking, loads of flake in it and when clean they do shine!

Howcome your going for 16's over 15's?

  Cup In bits
Anthracite

Hides the brake dust ;)

Thats my thinking too. Silver would look fresher. I still haven't found a picture. 2 reasons, either it looks crap or someone never had the 16" changed to silver before.

They will be getting powder coated so hopefully they come out with speckle to them like standard.

I am only fitting Eibach sportlines so it will look better on 16" plus I have tyres bought already and I can squeeze my 4 pots under them

I have a few sets of 15" wheels with slicks and a048's so I might hold off fitting the brakes to get a trackday in on the slicks.

Cool, have you seen the cooksport springs? I fitted a set to someones sport yesterday and I'd say there on par handling wise with the eibachs and give a slightly lower stance.

Must admit, I'm half tempted with a set of the TD 1.2's aswell.

Morgan, I'd say the anthracite will be a better suited colour, and certainly more forgiving in the environment you intend to be using the car.
bet you can't wait to be on your way for the skiing trip now after a day like that on the car :)

Dan, looked nice buddy.

Heres my old 172 on pro races and coilovers

Looks good, 15's need to have coilovers or cheap springs to look half decent.

Yeah I'm decided on anthracite, save me cleaning them too much. 1.2's are a good all round wheel for any car and there not that expensive.

Yeam mate can't wait tbh, another few of those days ahead before I go away :banghead:

Another busy day, the car was playing ball today and only one broken bleed nipple .

Broke down all the subframe, gave it a wash down ready for a paint and the new bits.

Spot the difference, someone's had a little too much fun here. It's part of the reason for the strange handling. A different way to adjust your caster.

Tried to throw in timing tools to give it a quick check before removing, inlet cams a 5deg out :S ....No sign of the tippex timer so must have been done wrong with the right tools

This Car doesn't have any bias valve fitted, the early cups must have never came with them or the R.S stamped lower inlets.

Got bored of pulling everything apart so decided to build up the back axle again, new shockers, Eibach sportlines, Whitelibe ARB, braided hoses, refurbed disks (will need disk spacers as this disks don't rotate when tightened, the ones that came off did :S) The pad slide is for blasting and will get painted before fitting, bleed nipple broke so need to source one before bleeding.

Cam cover, inlets , engine mounts etc are all away for blasting and will get a coat of paint before going back on.

More to come tomorrow.

More done today, I was held up with waiting in blasting and my mates ST needing some suspension. Car will be running and back on 2 wheels tomorrow, I'm waiting on rear disk spacers before I can get it on the ground.

Subframe painted and rebuilt with new tie and track rods, bottom arms, painted ARB and replaced bushes.

Got all the pieces back from blasting by my mate tonight so gave them Ll a coat of paint, graphite grey never turned up so the cam cover went orange and everything else crackle black.

Everything is drying up tonight ready to be built up tomorrow.

Your getting carried away mate, before you know it you will have a 20k racer lol Good job though mate.

regarding the timing tool pic, how do you if its out? does the tool have to be level? (this is an area I have absolutely no idea in).

Everything has been bought for it, no more should be spent other than fuel, insurance and a couple of track days, all my £'s and time will be spent on the race car when it returns from paint. This thing should be a nice little b-road blaster.

Yeah the tool has to be level and slot into both cams easily (the grooves are off centre on the cams and as you can just make out on the pic, the small section is on the top when it should be at the bottom, the crank is 180 deg out in that pic) when no1 piston is at TDC (top dead centre, i.e top of its stroke) and when the crank pin is in you tension the belt and lock off all the pulleys.

Had a half day on the car and got some more done.

The car was snap steering over bumps when out in the road, I found a buckled wishbone on the o/s but after further investigation the subframe hole was enlarged causing the car to steer when it wanted.

Take a brush, emery cloth and duct tape.

I just set the cams to standard timing until the mot is passed and then I will have a play with either semi group n or full group n settings.

More to come tomorrow, first road test hopefully if the disk spacers come.

With regards to the blasted cam cover, are you not concerned that the removal of a few microns of material from the bearings, and a change in surface roughness will stop them from working properly? Especially as it is the top half of the bearing that will be doing all the work reacting against the valve forces.

Yeah slightly worried but you can only piss with the c**k you've got. I'm more worried about the lower compression on one of the cylinders. You can take a fair bit off them without issue on this type of thing unlike a big or small piston end or crank journal. It was a wet blaster that was used too so not as harsh as sand blasting, I polished them back upto a half decent finish and the cams will do the rest come time hopefully. Only a couple of £100 to put right if the engine goes, if it was a expensive race engine I can't say I would be doing the same but it ain't as bad as it sounds tbh.

Fair enough mate I hope it holds out, should do. Am I right in thinking it's a liquid gasket that seals the gasket cover? That'll help seal it now it isn't a shiny surface!

Yeah liquid gasket so it will take up any slight imperfections. I'll know soon anyway as I'm away to start it

haha just came back to edit my post since you've got a picture with the liquid gasket on page 1!

I'm sure it'll all go smoothly. I like this thread since it's a good modest project and you're really going to town with tearing the thing apart!

No leaks so far, just got a suspected air leak to sort out. Yeah its nothing too fancy, just a good useable daily that wont be like a fush out of water on track. It is in too many pieces though....I'm regretting that now.

Got some more done, got all the fluids in and started it up, subframe on and suspension built up. The car wants to idle at around 2k then will drop down after you hold the revs up for a while. I will swap out for my spare TB to see of that helps, it looks to be pulsing on idle.

Almost finished bay, just needs a big clean and some heat shield on the bulk head

How do you have no rear brake compensator if you have no ABS? What's limiting the fluid distribution to the rear?

I r confused lol

Compensatirs are usually fitted irrelevant if its abs or not, If I do have on then its not in the same place as my other cup and I have yet to find anything compensator like lol.

Brembo's look great! Fantastic progress.

Cheers, they really need painting but that can wait.

Quick one of the car back down on the ground after a little road test. Few things need looking at, the tracking is severely needing done and it spewed its pas fluid out shortly after that pic....Arsed for just now. I'll have a look when I'm back from holiday and i'll get the interior swapped out, plates and wheels fitted, machine polished and a general going over.

After returning from holiday I had a few days off, cracked my rib so working is a bit hard but done some bits tonight. I forgot to take pictures though.

Found the pas fluid leak, tightened dodgy union on the pirtek hose I had made and topped up and bleed the steering.

Drilled out bleed nipple and cleaned threads and fitted new nipple to o/s/r caliper.

Fitted new rear disks and brembo pads with stub axle spacers after removing 5mm off the front and back hub spigots to allow 10mm spacers.

Fitted the rear braided lines that came with the 197 front hoses and flushed system with ATE super blue fluid.

Removed gear change security lock that turned out to be quite a job.

Checked all lights and replaced a few bulbs for upcoming MOT on Thursday.

Tomorrow my new pro race 1.2's will be here that have been freshly powder coated in anthracite, I will get the new hankook s1 evo's fitted and chucked on the car, I will remove clean and swap out the interior for half leather/alacantra and potentially fit the buckets, harnesses and steering wheel after I have a word with the tester.

That will just leave giving the car a quick wash and a good road test to scrub in the brakes and tyres ready for a track day on Saturday if I'm not punted away to work.

So.....got a bit more done finally after the wheels arrived. They turned out to be et40 wheels as the seller was clueless. Bit of a disappointment as they came damaged after being freshly powdercoated and a few other bits wrong with them like no spigot rings and badly fitting centre caps, i'm going to persevere with them for just now and get the damaged ones re done at my leisure.

Earlier in the week I contacted Team Dynamics and had some new centre badge stickers sent out.

Removed old, cleaned and fitted new.

I got the tyres fitted at my local Kwik Fit and realised they had just had a new Hunter alignment machine fitted so I'll give them a go when the geo is getting done, can't go wrong at £40 with me watching over them. I think I will cancel my geo and MOT tomorrow, I'll see how I feel when I get up.

All the exhaust hanger bolts had broken when I got the car so I drilled and fitted some rivnut's with my Memfast rivnut tool, loving the tool tbh, makes fitting rivnut's a doddle

So I got the car back down on the ground finally with 20mm spacers up front and nothing on the rear, I plan to have 10mm all round come time when I get the right bolts, this is now possible after modifying all the hubs to accommodate 10mm hubcentric spacers. I went for a quick run and the brakes are rudiculous and aren't even bedded in yet, I have some DS2500 pads to fit too :S

Its sitting with a fair bit of rake just now which hopefully the half leather/alacantra will go some of the way to level out.

Started to clean the new interior and whipped out the old, gave up due to the amount of dog hair and fading light so I'll continue tomorrow which will give me a chance to do a full detail and maybe fit the buckets. I'm worse than a women for changing my mind though with what I want in there for day to day. Has anyone removed all the platforms from under the seats to get a little lower and how did it work out?
