Best portable mp3 music player thing

I'm just looking for ideas really.

I can't afford ipod things as they're over my (tiny) budget but I was wondering if there were any good mp3 portable player things. Much as I love my JVC walkman from the early 90's, it is a bit of a brick...

I'd like at least 4gb storage I reckon, preferably more, but I know it's probably not going to happen.

I was thinking about this one:

as then I could just buy cards, but by the time I've spent money on cards I might as well just go for a dedicated player, plus this one doesn't have any sort of search facility, it just plays in order...

Anyone got any recommendations? :)

iPod Nano for 4GB.
For 4GB, they are quite cheap (solid state etc..)

The Nano is very cheap for 4GB Solid State memory. (as well as the player itself..)

512MB players are a bit cheaper?

I would say iPod shuffle, but no screen might be a bit of an issue.. (would be for me anyway)

The funny purple thing? They're not solid state are they?

I'm tempted by solid state as the less to go wrong the better...

I've heard that the new walkmans are good though.

But nano's are yum...

decisions! (not sure I can afford either though tbh lol)

Whats the budget?

Creative micros are only around £140 new. But you can get a 40gb player for £160 not solid state but they take a fair bit of punishment mine has over the 2 years. Been dropped countless times and theres still not even a scratch in it yet..suppose the brushed aluminium casing kinda helps there.

Also the creative muvo's which are rather tiny and not that expensive.

whats solid state?? (mines gloss black)
I understood solid state to be like memory card memory and pretty sturdy whereas the bigger versions are hard drives and therefore have a higher risk of crashing.

It seems that the solid state limit is about 4gb now (nano) but how long 'til bigger versions come out? SD cards are up to 2gb now and I'm sure that they'll continue increasing in size...

Solid state is like a memory chip, no moving parts therefore playback isnt effected by movement/vibration and they are a bit more robust. Larger capacity are HDD type.

^^^ solid state dosnt mean no moving parts lol. it means its transitor/microprocessor based, and wont stop working if dropped/banged. plus the ipod's dont ever jump, as they have a big cache on them.

and if you want a cheap mp3 player, get a nokia 6230/6230i. memory cards upto 2gb, and interchanable...does video and mp3/acc.

flash memory is solid state, but so was a guitar amp from 20 years ago, because it was transitor based not valve based. a valve has no moving part and its not solid state.

do you know what a valve is in electrical terms?

ps. i havent bothered to read that link, i know what solid state means lol. and the net description dosnt always get it right. stupid computer bods changing the names of everything.

Dark ages technology, but IMO makes for a better sound on guitar amps as it gives a warmer richer tone. Russians still use valves in alot of their military equipment and as such they arent effected by EMP's like solid state.

Do you mean 40gb?? or 4gb?

you can get 40gb zen touches obviously HDD based for £160 new on comp websites.

The micros are around £140 they do a 20gb one very similar to the micro though as well.
