Burpspeed - From The beginning

  172 Race Car
Went in to see the hydralics pipe man on wednesday, he said he didnt have any gas to weld my pipe up and it might be a few days. Told him i wasnt in a rush but he rang me 4 hours later and said it was done! Legend tbh.

£31 to join the two bits of pipe and did a great job as before. Looked good untill I painted it, Lol

IMAGE_179.jpg

Got a few little bits done during the week.

track rod ends on and threads cleaned up ready for set up.

IMAGE_171.jpg

Sprayed the back of the passenger seat to tidy it up a bit. looks much better. Shame about the front. Gonna get my old dear to see if she can glue the cover back on or something for me.

IMAGE_174.jpg

Rain was forcast for today so wasnt sure how much would get done.

Yet again Dan (Shadowness) came over to lend a hand.

I fitted the newly made pas pipe.

IMAGE_185.jpg

And finished off the loom and relay for it.

IMAGE_186.jpg

Ran the wire through for the cooling fan overide and tested.

IMAGE_187.jpg

While I did that Dan stripped the front brakes down as I managed to get some discs this week.

IMAGE_181.jpg

I wanted to remove the ABS sensors but they were 'In there' so had to get medievil with them. Ended up cutting the hub carrier.

IMAGE_182.jpg

Stud conversion was fitted to the hubs.

IMAGE_183.jpg

And new disc on, again with the previosuly loved Greenstuff (*spits on the floor), brake pads

IMAGE_184.jpg

A year ago (Here) I rigged up my clutch ratchet to stop it auto adjusting. At the time it wasnt engaging the clutch properly when changing gear at high revs. You would just crash the gears. But with a new clucth im hoping this mod/bodge isnt needed anymore. So removed them for now so it can do its job. (kept them handy if needed)

IMAGE_188.jpg

We filled up and tested the pas system and found no leaks.

Fitted the induction piping

IMAGE_189.jpg

So we were making amazing progress, the sun was out and it was looking like it could go down on its wheels again. Bomber came over to pick up some tyres and gave an extra hand.

Front wheels went on

IMAGE_190.jpg

Ran some cable to the interior. Might change this later to some better stuff.

IMAGE_191.jpg

Almost finished the wiring for the cut out switch

IMAGE_192.jpg

Then down on its wheels for a quick run around the street, check the clutch and gearbox, pas, brakes etc.

IMAGE_193.jpg

Turned her around on the driveway for some rear end attention next weekend. shouldn't be far off an mot after that.

IMAGE_194.jpg

Bomber had a little spin in it around the street.

Im super happy with the way it looks sat on the drive right now, the rear ride height on the AST's looks so good. It may have to go down a little at the front tho. Front bumper looks good, needs a spliter, will keep an eye out for something cheap and suitable.

After todays acheivements, I have a big grin on my face tbh

Nice work once again...

I had a NIGHTMARE getting those ABS sensors out too, but I ended up milling them out as they were off the car at the time

I thought about taking the whole lot off and taking them to a mates garage to get them out but felt it would eb a backwards step to take stuff off id just fitted, Lol.

Still got the back to do yet  hope they come out easier

Nice, great progress btw.

I will text you in the week about the disks fella.

Cant wait to see this again.

SHE LIVES!!!

Cant believe we got it moving, was quite weird to see actually, considering what it was like when I first saw the car months ago!

Good luck m8! Im sure it will be fine :)

Did you manage to get the passenger seat sorted?
Seeing my old dear on sunday, will get her to have a look then. Might look out for another one like I had before, ive still got the subframe for it

It'll sail through with your handywork.

Booked any days yet?
No not yet, Apart from 2 sessions at the Practical Performance Car Magazine show at Mallory Park in May. Need to do a day before that if I can.

Probably going to do FCS and Bedford in June

Not alot more needs doing to get it MOT ready.

The battery has been on charge in the back of my van all week and deffo its fecked!

Need to get another on tuesday (dam bank holiday)

Turned my attention to the rear brakes.

IMAGE_195.jpg

Took off the pad carrier and gave the discs a clean up.

IMAGE_196.jpg

Found a pad on the O/S had been sticking and worn on a funny angle

IMAGE_204.jpg

Everything seems free on the caliper now but I did have a little problem with it on the mot last year where it was binding slightly. Put it down to being parked up for a few moths coz after a few aplications of the handbrake it freed off.

Will have to keep an eye on this.

Decided to leave the rear abs sensors in for now. If I have to take off the hubs for camber adjustment then I'll get them out then. Just cut the wires off for now.

IMAGE_197.jpg

Rear abs loom out..

IMAGE_202.jpg

Fitted the studs to the rear

IMAGE_198.jpg

IMAGE_199.jpg

New pads fitted.

IMAGE_201.jpg

Popped the wheels on (one has lost some air coz the bead is leaking, another job for later)

Found a puddle in the passenger footwell, its been bone dry all winter inside the car. Been parked the other way on the sloping drive for a week and this happens.

Another job for another day.

IMAGE_205.jpg

Decided to tackle the heat sheild. Planned to attatch it to the egnine instead of the bulkhead this time. So the plenham had to come off again (are you keeping count?)

IMAGE_207.jpg

Used the old one i had and cut it down a bit, idealy needed a new piece as this is a bit small but it will do the job just fine. Needed something to keep the heat away from the master cylinder.

IMAGE_206.jpg

Fitted to the manifold studs

IMAGE_208.jpg

Engine put back together again...........

IMAGE_209-1.jpg

So apart form the battery, she is MOT ready. a few things to check, lights etc and clear out all the crap but I think that will do for now.

Still havent got a replacment for the broken rear helper springs, hopefully the tester will realise that they dont actually do anything and wont fail it.

if you can't get new helper springs in time, just remove the broken ones. they're not true helper springs really (WAY to soft for that), just keep the spring located so it doesn't come loose when you jack the car up

Looking at it it might not be possible to take them out coz the spiring isnt long enuff to adjust them without. Will see what the tester says.

Ooh, studs, gonna have to get me some of them. Changing wheels without them is a pain in the arse.

Great progress as usual Jay. Next trackday, I want a ride
Studs kit is available on ebay for about 35 quid, real easy to fit, you could do it your self.

Really? Even with my ability to f*** up the most seemingly basic tasks?
you can take the wheels off cant you. so therefore you just have to put a little thread lock on the studs and screw them in with a screwdriver............. Easy?

yerp i am also looking at the stud conversion now, will be much easier to locate the wheels when studs are on, something i am looking at sorting within the next few weeks

Sorted out my insurance this morning. Ended up with Adrian Flux £350 fully comp with my Doris on the policy too.

That's the kind of price I want to pay at my ripe old age. 30 with 9yrs ncb.

Not the £600 odd I was paying last year.

Starts on the 28th :)

Thread update

------------------------------------

Decided to buy a new battery instead of dicking around with the old one. A direct replacement for the one I had was over £130!

Had a chat with the guy in my local battery specialist who sells stuff to race teams regularly. I ended up with an Odyssey 680, basically the same as a Redtop 25. He has used this type to start F3000 cars in the past. Its more than man enough and at £75 not cheap but better/safer than a normal car battery.

IMAGE_214-1.jpg

Only weighs 7kgs too....

Problem then was it wouldn't fit the lovely Adeyspec battery box.

IMAGE_215-1.jpg

IMAGE_216-1.jpg

DanR was over to help get all the battery cables in neat. We bolted the battery straight to the floor (more holes!) using the top of the battery box Adey made. It will be secured better at a later date.

IMAGE_217-1.jpg

Dan then made up some new cables using high quality cable. He's a perfectionist and made a very nice job of it. Better than me, the king of bodge.

IMAGE_218.jpg

IMAGE_222-1.jpg

IMAGE_219-1.jpg

IMAGE_221-1.jpg

We just need to secure and insulate the cables in a few places soon.

So after id put the seatbelts in, we had checked the lights and had a quick subway, it was down to the mot centre at 3pm.

IMAGE_220-1.jpg

I was bricking it tbh. Id had so much of the car apart, I was worried I may have left something loose. I don't know the guys very well down there but its literally 300yards from my house and they only charge £25.

The guy doing the test was 137 years old and didn't look to impressed with my handywork, Lol.

No mention of the tw*t strip at all (failed on that last year and I had to rip it off) he was a little worried by the missing abs system at first tho.

IMAGE_223-1.jpg

The emisions were spot on. That phase2 cat did the job. Last year (with the original cat on) it was a little slow to warm up and the CO was very high initialy.

Then came the problem!!

Handbrake efficiency low! 15%.

Minimum needed to pass was 16%

Fail! :dapprove:

New pads and only 300yards to bed them in, no wonder.

While the 189 year old guy had been doing the test, Id been chatting to the owner of the garage. He has a very mad Mini. Its a turbocharged A series. It runs at 200bhp before the nos, Lol. It has a quaife straight cut box that you can hear the otherside of town. Love it!

IMAGE_224-1.jpg

IMAGE_225-1.jpg

Anyway he lent me some trade plates so I could take the car out for a spin to try and bed the pads in. So completely unexpectedly I had a nice little run around the town in it.

40mins later it was back on the mot ramp and it JUST scraped through with 16%.

Pass! :D
