Burpspeed - From The beginning

  172 Race Car
Not quite, even though it was a very short drive today, it highlighted some things that need some looking at.

1, The clutch ratchet AGAIN!!!! Will be putting those bolts back in....

2, Gear linkage needs adjustment

3, Suspension setup is needed before I do any driving at all. It drove awfull!

4, The heater blows warm on the cold setting. The hole I made in the bulkhead to fit the wiper linkage means the heat from the engine bay is getting into the fan. I have a solution in mind.

5, A clunk from the n/s/f. No idea what it is yet.

6, The induction and road noise is mental. Nothing wrong with that, it just reminded me and thought id mention it. Its been 8 months!!

I ripped the PH-1 blower and last parts of the aircon crap under the scuttle panel...

So now I have a post box sized hole blowing onto my legs, until I cover it and fit cup blower on Friday FAIL!

Not much to report atm.

Bought a unlock key off Henk to use RS tuner on it. Will be loading the Group N onto it soon to give us a bit more revs when needed.

Also booked in on the 1st of May with Curtis for a 'proper' setup

When I uploaded the GRP N cal. the car defiantly produces more low down torque... and the raised rev limiter is nice :)

Those extra few revs really do make all the difference

off the top of my head an unlock code is 49 euro.... So what ever that would work out at with the current exchange rate?!

Then if somebody is kind enough to lend you an RStuner ;)

Was £44 and change. Got it unlocked tonight but ive no idea what to do next. Ive backed up the ecu and cal files.

Do I need to do a full ecu remap or just the cal files?

Gray? anyhelp?

Neil, I'll do yours after im happy with mine if you want.

Not gonna get matched inlets mate? Or are you waiting to see what happens with this super 2000 inlet manifold?

We will see. just want the group N map on there for now. If i get matched inlets it will still be ok with the group N. I MIGHT be having a set done.

S2000 inllet is deffo not on the cards anytime soon

Have you managed to figure out which files you need to write to the ECU now Jay? ie. which map?
No not yet, just going to look now. Im not going to do it untill ive got plenty of time to get it all setup. Car battery on a booster and laptop plugged into the mains etc.

Unlocked all ok tho and downloaded/backed up my current data

Firstly make a FULL back-up of your ECU

Then upload the latest standard engine software available to your car... A300_3504 I believe (but do not quote me on that haha)

http://www.fastchip.nl/content/view/32/27/

After that you upload the performance calibration ".cal" file, which should be the "Groupe_N.rst"

Then take it steady driving the car for the first few drive cycles.. The ECU goes into "learning" mode I believe after a full re-write, same effect when you disconnect the battery for a long period of time.

Hope that makes sense, if you where close I would pop over and do it for you

Bit confused by that. so I update the standard ecu settings first, then load on the group N file?

Why is the Group N file named .rst when it is a calabration file?

I was just told by someone to load the group N .rst file as the ecu update. then the 98ron.cal file

  340i
Do the standard engine software first, as the one from Fastchip should be an updated version to ours..

When you plug the RStuner in what does it say your standard software is?

  172 Race Car
no idea. I'll hjave another look when i get time. I know its never been done. Schweepy plugged his into it once. Think it said last updated jan 2000.

come down and do it for me and i'll do your fan, lol

  SchwepTek™
No no you need to do the Group N RST and the 98ron CAL that is all!

The ph1 has the group N rst available where as the 182 doesnt. All i could do was update the standard engine software and add the 98 ron CAL.

  340i
ahh...

It was a year ago I did mine!

I put the standard engine software on... Drove the car for a few days, then loaded the Groupe_N.rst file.

Never put anything else on, but it does run with the higher rev limit? meeh ;)

The insurance has started now so I can tax it tomorrow. This week I've been doing some little bits and pieces.

I bought a battery optimiser to keep my 'posh' battery in a charged state while its parked. Cost me £35 from the battery specialist I got the battery from. It has a very small output, 0.2amps, when the battery is fully charged, so it will keep it topped up nicely. The kit come with a small flylead that attatches permanently to the battery. Its just a case of pluginng it in when I get home. I've got no power outside the house yett so it has to go though the living room window, Lol.

Over the last week or so I've been sticking down the fabric around the edge of my passenger seat. Had to use pegs to hold it down while the glue set. Its much neater now. Will fit it in tomorrow.

IMAGE_239.jpg

Went up to my mates place to get the track wheels sorted. Had to give them a wash to clean the ferodo dust off them.

IMAGE_237.jpg

IMAGE_238.jpg

My God, they are black not grey! Then mounted a set of 'previosly loved' R888's. I'll put them on the car before friday so Curtis can set it up with the proper wheels on.

Got the GroupN ecu flash on there now using the RS tuner and we are giving it a good wash tomorrow as its over 10 months since it saw a sponge. Will tax it and give it a nice run to make sure everything is ok.

Let's just hope the weather is good tomorrow and we'll get the old **** looking as good as new ;)

Wouldnt mind having a ride if the passenger seat goes in, cant wait to hear this mighty induction kit lol!

See ya tomorrow :)

f**k me, where to start on todays MASSIVE events?

Shadowness (Dan) came over early to give me a hand again today. He is an absolute legend!

First job was to fit some seatbelt mounting points to the tunnel. I didnt want them on the seat subframe I wanted them further back. i got hold of some spreader plates for them. To do this we had to jack the car up and remove the exhaust to get access to the underside of the tunnel.

IMAGE_243.jpg

IMAGE_247.jpg

Marked them out and drilled the tunnel. They fit very neatly here and are in a perfect place.

IMAGE_244.jpg

IMAGE_245.jpg

While i was under there I noticed the handbrake mounting stud was ripped away from the floor, so knocked it out and replaced it with a bolt and nyloc nut. Handbrake lever is much more solid now. Probably been like this for ages.

IMAGE_246.jpg

Exhaust went back up (it really doesnt fit very well, hangs so low, a job/expense for another day) So then we could get on with giving it long overdue and much needed bath.

We took all the trim off, mirrors, spolier, bump strips, window rubbers etc, to discover the true horror of it!
 :dead:

Looked like it had been rescued from a pond!

IMAGE_261.jpg

We went to town on it, cleaning it in places that i didnt know existed. Not a mega 'anal' detail but more than ive ever done to any car ive ever owned!

I then decided that now would be a good time to fit that rear bumper id had in the loft since August.

IMAGE_256.jpg

Had to make the cutout and fit the surround to it. Its not perfect but when i get the exhaust sorted out and fitting propery i'll get it tidyer.

IMAGE_257.jpg

IMAGE_258.jpg

At least its Titanium now and not some halfords rattle can guess colour. It has a scuff on the nearside. not too bad, looks much better than the other one so thats all the matters.

Even before any clay, polish or wax it was already looking like a different car!

IMAGE_259.jpg

IMAGE_262.jpg

Dan gave it a clay and then a polish.

  172 Race Car
It was starting to look too good!

IMAGE_269.jpg

While he was busy with the wax I got on with fitting the passenger seat so we could go out on a test drive later.

Moved the seat further from centre now, as it was far too close to the drivers seat. Its a very wide seat and I may have some trouble getting a cage to fit beside it at a later date.

Probably get another seat before then anyway.

IMAGE_264.jpg

Then I finished off the battery cable.

IMAGE_267.jpg

I havent got a pic of it totaly finished, forgot!

Made up a little heat shield to cover the hole i made in the firewall. This should stop the engine bay heat going into the fan and blowing warn air. We tested this later and it worked a treat.
