Busted standard 182 Cat... replace with sports cat?

Wahey, first post, finally got around to registering. :approve:

Just had my 182 at its 24k service, asked them to look at the exhaust cos its been a wee bit noisy of late.

Bad news... they say I've damaged it hitting something (um yep, that would be when I grounded it on speedbumps about a million times...) but want to charge me something in the region of £900 including labour and VAT Oh, and post-inspection its now VERY noisy... funny that. Must be on commission before Xmas

I'm thinking... um no thank you Mr A Clark - I might just buy a new cat online and then get a local garage to fit it, question is...

Is it worth paying a bit more for a sports cat, e.g. this one from Ktec? http://www.k-tecracing.com/show_product.asp?id=1265 and whats the damage likely to be for a cheapo garage to fit it

I'm right in thinking the thing just unbolts and then the new one slots in in-line... its not exactly a hard job is it?

You could probably get a second hand one from a scrappy for about £20... but at least a sports cat will you give you a slight benefit. Most people would say get a decat and the first option i'd imagine!

Sports cats are not worth the money IMO.

Cat on for th MOT, decat on when it has passed.

Piss job todo aswell, but use some exhaust paste to make a good seal when putting back on and new bolts to make it easier next time.

I had the same problem with my clio and speed humps and yea they did try and tell me it would be 800 something for the bloody thing, which they got a polite i dont think so mr grease monkey.
i did get a sports cat and found it no differnt from the orignal cat, but now instead i have a de-cat and find it to be a lot differnt and better feel alot better

Get a decat, good improvement IMO.

Yozzasport make a very good quality decat for aout a ton.
I bought a 182 cat off a car being broken on ebay, it had covered 9 miles and was mint, they let me have it for £50!!! I will only be putting it on for MOT.

Figured you'd probably reccomend a de-cat, however the missus is not so keen, and since its her daily drive (my weekend toy) she gets final say.

Either way, I don't have the kit to lift the car and change it myself, and I'm not sure I'm brave enough without a how-to guide - its not worth my life if it ended up off the road for even a week!

How much do you think I'm looking at to get a non-renault garage to swap it out?

try these, cheaper than reanult apparently, then just get kwickfit to swap them over etc, but it is very easy on a 182. Try it yourself?

Right, thats it, I'm gonna spend the next couple of hours badgering the missus to let me get a lifting set and do it myself.

How hard can it be, its a pipe with a bulge...

Expect me back if its harder than you say, with a tragic story of busted manifold, "I told you so" and divorce proceedings.

just jack it up and put a couple of old wheels or bricks under it so it cant fall thats what i do lol, Improvise lol
