Right I am thinking about buying the above, maybe something like a w/x/yreg 2000 172 with around 60/70k on the clock. What are the sort of potential problems should I look out for?

Guessing I'll be paying between 2500 and 3250??

What sort of mpg do you guys get, official figure is 35mpg but thinking that may be a little optimistic??

Seen quite afew that have been remapped to 185bhp+ is this something that should put me off or can the engine handle it??

Many thanks in advance!

35 mpg is easiy acheivable. The MPG you get from these cars is fantastic tbh.

You can get a genuine 40 mpg on a run.

And I'd take the 185 bhp figure with a pinch of salt.

ph1 you'll be looking around 3k for that, and ph2 around 4 k, thats from lookin about a 2 weeks ago.

i get 33mpg around town and foot down.

long run 40mpg is very easy, so they are really good on fuel tbh.

watch out for rusty exhausts falling off, common problem, leaking rear dampers is another, notchy gearboxes are a sign of it being abused, its not the best gearchange in the world but it should go into gear easy, shouldnt jump out of gear or crunch when changing!

cambelt is due at 72k or 5 years so it should of atleast had it once, if it hasnt, id either walk away or use it as a good bargaining point as it costs £400-£600 depending on who does it!

aux belts are every 36k (not sure on age?) but if they snap then 99% of the time they take the cambelt out too.

Mis-firing seems quite common, this can be caused due to either the coil pack,HT leads or Spark plugs, all very easy fixes.

Window regulators are world famous for renaults make sure the windows go up and down smoothly.

Rear Bearings aswell, they whine like a b*****d when needing changed.

Apart from that all of the above aswell!

Try and get a cherished example, any neglect from the outset can have untold misery!

Thanks for the advice, looked at afew but still not bought one. Going to look at a 172 y reg ph2 2night, done about 80k. Would the mileage put anyone off? Its got fsh and cambelts been done.

I suppose its only just a little over average. Are there any signs to look for that its been thrashed?

What do you think I should be paying for something like that? 3k cash?

I picked up my X plate 172 today, in near mint condition. 60k, cambelt changed, £3595 - Sounds steep, but I got a very good price for the civic I traded against it.

The mechanic at the garage hadn't tightened up the connectors on the battery properly, so I've just had my first experience of working under a Reanult bonnet at the side of the road. Hopefully my last...

Well happy so far. Hurry up and buy one! :rasp:

Bristol and Somerset are a little too far away. Sorry.

Re Mileage -

I bought my car at 78K, the Cam belt had been changed, so thats one thing you shouldnt have to worry about

The only real problems I have had, was a fuse blowing, and then general suspension parts (not particularly expensive tbh) which is usual for a car over 7 years old and with 80+k on the clock.

Wouldnt let mileage put you off, there are plenty of 1*2's on 100k+ going strong!

:)

when you go and buy on.......just log in your head there french....nothing will suprise you then.....................:banghead:

I heard they were fairly realiable solid cars, seem to have come down a lot in price in the last year. The insurance doesn't even seem to be that bad, not for a grp16 any way.

I would travel for the right car, but all the ones I have looked at (4) have looked really good in pics but have been a different story in the flesh.
