Just as an example - Supra TTs have a better auto box than the manual. It can take much more power and torque. That box though was designed to go in that car. As are all auto boxs.
If you were to take an auto box and put it in a car that it wasnt designed for then it will cause problems.
The Clio auto box just wont be up to it in the Williams. Just cause it fits doesnt mean it will do its job propery.
hit the nail on the head, im just to lazy to think bout how to word it properly
saved me saying it.Quote: Originally posted by dogmaul on 04 August 2004

agree my step sister had a bad motorbike accident damaging her left knee and all she can drive is a automatic .its a shame ppl in that situation cant have what they wantQuote: Originally posted by AGMitch on 04 August 2004
I know theres not a huge demand for auto versions of fast wee cars like the Williams/172/182, but why shouldnt Renault make one available?
A colleague at work had a bad skiing accident 10 years ago, damaging her left knee and making it impossible to use a clutch pedal. Shes driving a Clio 1.2 Quickshift (awful gearbox - so hesitant - but a good idea) and has been after a small, quick, cheap car like my 172 for ages, but no-one makes anything like this in auto form. Personally I prefer manuals in this type of car - it suits my type of driving. But why should those who cant or dont want to change gears themselves be denied the chance to own such a car?
Good luck with getting what you want!
Whats that supposed to mean? The majority of my family are American, but they are also literate.Quote: Originally posted by scondog on 04 August 2004
dog maul I completely agree. Shes either a complete f**king r****d (and judging by the way she writes, this could well be the case) or American. Either way, if you cant drive a manual box you shouldnt be allowed on the road. Fail three driving tests and youre banned for life - thats another rule Id like to see.

Because a lot of american cars are auto. Do you not understand the use of a complex sentence including brackets? - Just sick of peoples anti American attitudes. In regards to my basic understanding and grasp of the English language you should know that you never start a sentence with Because. The reason being it makes you look like a half wit... but if the cap fits...
To be honest i think it is a stupid idea converting to auto. Autos should be for cars like grand tourers, not hot hatches! i think lisa should stop telling herself she cant do it and go learn how to use a manual. Unless she is disabled and it is not possible for her
the actual box linkage is different though isnt it. the zoom clutchless clio has the hydraulic mechanism on top of the box and works the linkages through the top whilst the williams selector mechanism is controlled from underneath.Quote: Originally posted by Red Clio 52 on 04 August 2004
Take this view seriously, you can retain the original Williams gearbox/clutch etc using this method and not have to experiment with matching untried/untested engine /clutch/gearbox combinations. The technology is there on the Renault Clio QS5 tried and tested and based on F1 technology.Quote: Originally posted by Red Clio 52 on 03 August 2004
It SHOULD be possible to retain the standard Williams gearbox and fit the Renault Quickshift system which uses a standard gearbox but an Electro-Hydraulic selector system. It would involve fitting the hydraulic reservoir/hydraulic accumulator/electric pump/twin pedals etc. that are fitted on the Clio Quickshift 5. Could prove an expensive mod though. You will have to visit your local friendly Renault dealer to price up the parts. I would think that Andy at GDI would take on the challenge of modifying your williams. Best of luck, dont be put off by the negative thoughts posted on this forum, It will make your Williams unique and fun to drive on your license.

nope my mate now needs a manual box fitted as the auto cant take over 6/700bhp
I have a 1.8 at 18.... wanna sl*g me off?Quote: Originally posted by scondog on 04 August 2004

How old do we reckon she is anyway? 17,18 maybe. Stop dreaming love and get yourself a mk1 fiesta like I had when I first drove. 997cc and it still cost £750 a year fully comp!
Im with Ben on this the auto box is just as weak the difference is people have trouble hammering the auto as much as the manuals with poor shifts clutch drops incorrect rpm speed matching on the downshift etc.Quote: Originally posted by Matt16v on 04 August 2004

I was only suggesting to Lisa that to incorporate the Clio QS5 Auto select mechanism may be a way for her to retain her Williams in Auto form. I agree that some modification may be required and did say that it could prove an expensive modification.Quote: Originally posted by JAY172 on 05 August 2004

Agreed, thats why I sugested to her that she apporoaches a professional such as Andy at GDI or possibly one of the companies that specialises in conversions. The QS5 system components are available and in current production so could form the basis of a modification using the original Williams gearbox. At a price anything is possible.Quote: Originally posted by JAY172 on 06 August 2004
