the golf started nothing. the minis were converted to hatches in the 60s , few companies, radford, wood n picket , to name a couple. throw in a cooper s lump...fuk all would touch em.


williams has to win that comp tho.

W&P and Radford were coachbuilders/tuners, famous for their conversions in the 60's. the mini's a saloon car; the hatch versions are just very rare conversions. the Cooper/S is still the car that most would argue started off the hot hatch ethos of a 'go faster shopping car' in production cars.

the mini would never come to my head thinking of hothatchs. although i do like the old mini cooper and had one in the household for a while. the gti may not be the 1st hothatch but it is the hothatch that started the love for the hothatch

If you take away the 4 4wd cars (R32, ESCOS, Delta and GTIR) and have it the true hot hatch's in my opinion its down to 4 cars obviously the 205 and Mk1 golf go straight through then its the ultimate RWD hot hatch the Lotus sunbeam and the ultimate FWD hot hatch the RS Focus !!!!

Mini doesn't count if the hatches were rare conversions...they're looking for the ultimate hot hatch.

My votes for 205 Gti...I loved mine back in the day.

Is an INtegra Type r a hatch (the boot is hatched into the car) or is it a coupe technically? They did make a 4 door hatch in Japan.

this is the problem with the title 'hot hatch' - it's a bit misleading as you tend to exclude cars that should, perhaps, be considered (just because they don't have a hatchback) and include some that shouldn't (like the Integrale)

if you take it literally (ie. 'hatchback'), then there are a few cars that could technically be included (Quattro, Impreza, etc) whereas they're usually viewed differently (as the Integrale should - as said, they're 4wd rally homologations)

the same cars crop up in these comparisons every time though

“Best” is a bit of a loaded question and what criteria modded or original but IMO
Best New HH for performance/handling Megane R26-R (A3 S3 & 172CUP would be up there)

Best New HH for day to day normal use the sensible & expensive option any Golf GTI or S3
Best HH for the money/fun around 5 years old or about £5K 182 Trophy or Type R
Best 10 year old+ HH 205GTI/Delta Intergrale/GT Turbo
Most Mental HH Clio V6
Probably missed a few Fords & Alfa’s. I like MK1 GTI's but its hardly anywhere near the R32 in any respect apart from maybe depreciation

there are loads and loads! Farina's a good spot

i guess the term was first coined by the Mk1 Golf but, if you exclude everything pre-Golf, you kill off some of the favourites (Alfasud, Sunbeam, etc)

it's a can'o'worms for sure and is only a bit of fun at the end of the day

Neither were rare conversions surely - ie the mini didn't come out the factory as a hatch. The williams definitely did - it was based on a hatch, so was the RS500 - I believe a 3 door sierra is a hatch was it not?
