changing an mx record

right i need the mx record changing for one of our domains so that all incoming mail goes via message labs.

the company that are hosting our website fasthosts (it wasnt set up by me !) will only allow you to have a primery route no secondary as a back up and will only allow you to specify an ip adress where i need to put a fqdn

they say use zoneedit.com but you have to pay for that so is there any other way to do it for free ??

You can't set an MX record to anything but an FQDN.
You ALWAYS have to use a FQDN and then just create a record for that FQDN.

No way are they setting the MX to an IP.. my guess is they're lazy, and they have mail.domain.tld, and they will only update that record for mail.

You could always just give them the IP of the FQDN?

ZoneEdit is free for the first 5 domains..

Do it - we pissed around with zoneedit and didn't have the patience to work it properly...

Move to someone decent, then atleast you know you have control over everything, and can add MX records and change preferences whenever you want!

only if it doesnt go over 200mb of traffic it says

fasthosts site says
Email DNS (MX record)

Fasthosts email system Use our mail servers for full email hosting or email forwarding.
Specify an IP address (e.g. 123.456.78.9)

F&B

I must admit, that sounds very shoddy from Fasthosts, is there a chance they may have misunderstood what you were asking? Do they definitely look after the domain (not just the Website) for you?

As for only allowing an IP address for mail routing, are you sure they aren't looking after the email for the domain at the moment and are thinking you are asking for the inbound route from them to you to be changed? They may not understand that you want to send all email via MessageLabs (i.e. MX for yourdomain.com points to clusterX.messagelabs.com and then MessageLabs send direct to your mail gateway IPs). You aren't on a hosted mail setup with Fasthosts by any chance?

i explicitly said to the bloke i need to point incoming mail to the 2 message labs towers and he replied you cant have more than 1 route unless you use something like zoneedit

Advanced DNS settings

Advanced DNS settings enable you to use different providers for website and email hosting, whilst still using Fasthosts nameservers.

thats the page the mx record option is on that i posted above it allows the change of A record and mx but only allows a primary route
