Cheap 172 Cup

Been offered an 02 clio 172 cup with 70,000 miles on clock, 6 months tax and and just under a full years mot for £1350 but very little service history. Car is currently in daily use but needs some work done to it. I haven't had a test drive yet but the bodywork is in quite good condition and so are the alloys. Apparently the clutch is about to go so will need replaced along with one of the cv joints at front and a bearing for the speedometer. Due to the mileage I reckon it would also be best to change the belts too so probably talking about spending a grand in total to get it back to its former glory. Not sure whether the car is worth the hassle or not and was wanting some advice. Should I take the project on or stay well clear and just buy an immaculate one for double the price? Any input would be helpful, thanks.

Wait an buy a much better car that needs no work doing.

If you Include the repairs need to the one you have been offered your talking 2k+ all in.

Check if cam has been done (and who by!) If its been done by back street garage, then it might be no point in getting it as with the other work being required...could cost a fair bit.

It is coming up to a 10 year old car...so will have faults...

i just bought mine cheap, knowing it needed dephaser and couple of bits to tidy. that way ive spread the cost out over time as with all the bits its still in my budget. and I know 100% its been looked over by a specialist now when i had the dephaser done @ birchdowm. it is/was a risk i suppose though, but it's a cheap car ultimately.

i dont think the clutch is a cheap job tho?

Thanks for all your opinions guys, think i will either just wait til i find an immaculate one or spend some of the money on a few mods for my mk6.5 fiesta zetec s

I picked up mine with full service history and the cambelt & dephaser done for £1,600 so there are better ones out there for a cheap price! Plus it had the engine replaced 40'000 miles ago with a full invoice to prove the work done by a Renault specialist so save your cash and wait for a better example!

If you want something to work on and sort out get it. This is what i did with my car, and once everything was sorted it gave me alot of satisfaction :)

If you want hassle free dont bother!

The asking price for the car has now been dropped to £1000 o.n.o due to seller purchasing a new car so needs it gone asap, seems a steal at that price as you could probably break the car for parts and make a tidy little profit. Any opinions?
