With
@Fletcher giving a helping hand we managed to tear down the old engine.
Started off by moving the engine out into the driveway on to a tray to work in.
Then set about removing the sump so we could sit the block down level. Only one of the 21 bolts gave us trouble but that was more to the incorrect tooling. Once the sump was off the smell of petrol was obviously present again. There was not much in the way of swarf of other foreign bodies other than a piece of metal that must of gone round the engine. Could be new or from the time i smashed the sump.
Next up was taking the rocker cover and Cams out. Again didn't have the correct tools so struggled to get the Cams out with out taking the cover off at the same time. Took the cam belt off to start with and then unbolted the cover and lifted it off with the Cams in place in one piece. Again no obvious damage that we could see but to be fair were not 100% what its meant to look like in the first place. The cams look like they have become hot in places and have changed colour slightly, il get some better pictures in the coming week of everything.
Then the head came off. This is where we started to see some damage and irregularities. First off was when taking the head bolts out they all came out clean and dry apart from one that was covered in oil. Once the Head was off we could see in all the holes were dry other than the one that was filled with oil ? Not sure if that's normal or not. It was the furthest on the right lower corner if your looking at the engine from the inlets.
There was no signs of damage in the Bores at all, they all looked very clean. My original thinking behind the oli usage and smoke from the exhaust was that a piston ring had let go. But from the looks of it there all intact.
The other think we noticed was on the Head gasket.
Obvious signs of damage as there is a part of the gasket that is bent and mangled sat over one of the oil channels.
Not sure how that as ever happened, as far as im aware its never had the head off ??
So after a cuppa and a bacon roll we flipped the block upside down and started to remove the crank and piston ends. We also found some damage here as well.
Stated by pulling out the bolts that hold the crank in place. One the once marked No2 we found some big damage. Something had obviously been dragged round it as the scoring on it is pretty deep and wide.
All the other were clean and not marked.
Other than those bits that is the only damage we could see. We then got the Pistons out and checked those over and they were totally intact. No damage where they connect to the Crank or from the Rings. So a bit unsure as to what has happened to be honest. Not bothered as its getting the new engine anyway. Would be good to know what happened though.
@NorthloopCup,
@Dan@SJM any thoughts ? Will get some pictures later in the week of all the bits iv missed.
Again Thanks to Fletch for coming over and giving me a hand. Theres not much stopping me now from getting it all back together and getting it sorted, so hopefully by the spring it will be back better than ever.
