Clio 1.2 engine problem back fire and cut out

having a problem with my clio with back fire and engine cut out. clio 1.2 mk2 ph1. When i rev the engine back fires at different times and get a really strong smell of fuel.
anyone got any ideas i am going to get it booked to be linked to a computer.
