Clio 172/182 hidden rust traps

Hi,

I have been doing some corrosion maintenance on my Clio 182, and have discovered a few mud traps which don't appear widely discussed.

My findings were:
  1. A triangular shelf area between the rear axle mounts, tucked up high;
  2. Beside the fuel tank on the driver's side, adjacent the axle mounting point;
  3. Behind the front wheel arch liners, bottom of the A-post;
As the cars are now getting to an age where corrosion is properly setting in without preventative maintenance, may it be worth compiling a list of areas to inspect, clean and (if required) prepare, treat and paint / protect?

Behind the fuel filler
Behind skirts and wheel arch liners
Rear inner sills behind doorcards
Door moldings and skirts trap grit which abrade the paint away and corrosion sets in.
Same for the rear arches where they meet the bumpers. Grit gets trapped between the 2 panels and wears the paint away. Then the metal panel begins to corrode.

behind the rear bumper where it mounts to the body. This wasn't mine, was a 200k car but mine looked like if I didn't treat it it would start to go in the next few years

Look at this for rust trap that in a 172 is near to inaccessible, no problem on a 182 due to the boot floor.

Good under the bumper, but gave it a good clean and the waxoyled

One small rub mark on the exterior of wheel well (no corrosion though) - so wafted some under-seal on it .

Few rub marks on the interior of the wheel well so painted with some satin black

Next I checked behind rear cards in the inner sill.
Small amount of surface rust both side but absolutely solid

I scraped/ sanded as best I could, then it’s had two coats of -

I have some POR 15 paint on the way and then some cavity wax

Above rear beam and petrol filler need some attention but going to wait until I can get on a ramp. Might use it as an excuse to replace the beam mounts for ployflex

Where the rear inner arches meet the outer panel, if the underseals been punctured by a stone, water can creep under between the seam, visible from the inside of the car once rear side carpet in the boot is removed.

Yes, if you pull the loom off its usually hidden by that!
 
You can add the little floorpan strengthening sections with bungs in to the list. I think someone has jacked up on there before but it's taken out a big chunk of sill with it.

above happened to my 182 as some animal made a mess of jacking it up, had to have it chopped out and welded up
