Clio 172 cup LOUD engine noise

So I bought a 172 Cup yesterday and would you believe it completely broke down on the way back home! The guy I bought it off posts on here and I do not believe for one second he know of an existing fault so i'm quite confident i didn't buy a complete dud. The cambelt/dephaser pulley were changed a couple of months ago all backed up with receipts. Oil, filter, plugs etc all changed.

Was driving back home and I was hearing like a tapping/belt noise coming from the radio area/gear box every time I took my foot off the accelerator then it stalled on a roundabout and I thought it was just me getting used to the car. Anyway completely broke down on the next roundabout had to get RAC out etc, was devastated!

Managed to get it back on my drive and since then got the engine back running. It is now making an absolutely awful loud banging noise, I've attached a youtube vid to show you just how bad, it's pretty awful!!

Sounds like I may need a new engine! Gonna contact Birchdown when they're back off holiday on Wednesday, anyone any idea at all what i may be?

Now I'm not suggesting any foul play in the sale, but I'd be VERY skeptical of a car dying on the way home.

I'd be thuper thuspicious.

I dont know, these things happen I suppose think I've just been super unlucky as the engine was running well until the last few miles which is typical, I rang Fred @ BTM to get a quote, looking expensive but I suppose if i do have to get a new engine i know it'll last me a while from a specialist

Engines do come up mate, don't think it matters whether it's a 172 or 182. If it was me I'd chuck a lower mileage 182 engine in it...
