Clio 172 cut out in traffic and wont start again

  clio Sport 172
Hello Everyone

My Clio sport 172 cut out in traffic the other day. I am able to turn it over but just not able to get it started.

I've checked the relays, fuses, injectors and spark plugs. I've seen the TDC sensor coming up in forums a lot could this be the cause? also does anyone know how to test them?

unless there are any other sensors that could be playing up causing the car not to start?

any help would be appreciated

Open the oil filler cap and check to see if the camshaft rotates when the engine is turning over

If you can't see movement = start saving.

Any eml on dash?

I'm in the same boat as you may have heard, literally. I am getting spark in mine so have not yet changed the TDC sensor. I'm closely watching this! But will also let you know if I find a solution for mine!

Then you are proberbly going to need help with this one then. Firstly you'll need to confirm the crank sensor is functioning AND secondly that the signal is being recieved by the ECM (note: cleaning the sensor and confirming it is plugged in doesn't mean its all working)

You'll need to plug it in and look at the live data to see if engine speed is being reported as 0 rpm with the engine off and then see it register a speed of around 300-400rpm when "cranking". If its not reporting speed then rotation isn't being detected and the computer is not knowing you want to run the engine.

Come back when this has been confirmed as okay/faulty and we'll go to the next step.

The engine speed is showing 186 rpm when the engine isn't cranking, my van is showing a reading of 0 rpm which I would expect.

Then it looks like a wiring fault or some king of interference chap.

OK great it looks like we're getting somewhere.

Do you know how easy it would be to replace the TDC Sensor cable? I cant see where it goes back to.

as an additional test I shorted the TDC sensor cable and it was displaying exactly the same rpm.

The wiring should be shielded as it runs in the loom next to the main battery/starter motor cable then back to the ECU.

Very easy to trace tbh

Firstly check the connector is physically okay as they are problematic (hence Renault changed its design slightly with the blue upgrade)

The connector appears to be fine I've disconnected the cabling from the ECU and found the relevant pins to test from. A continuity test on the cable is coming back OK so proved there is no brake or short in the cable.

As I've replaced the TDC sensor I guess the next job would be to replace the ECU and other relevant parts?

What would you recommend?

Never replace the ecu, unless testing proves it is dead. Generally the Sirus ECM's are bomb proof unless you get them wet or give em a serious surge.

I'd say the next course of action is proper diagnostics. It may be a power issue to.

Could be the main power relay at fault to which you can check yourself if you have access to a decent multimeter
