Must warn you though - I had a 3 month old cup with 1200miles on the clock, and when I was travelling at 55 on a coutry lane the electrics when causing the steering to go really heavy and meaning that I just went straight on through hedge and ditch etc. Because it was electrical obviously the air bags didnt go off and my passenger was injured (just concusion and bruised forehead) - When I managed to get it soughted Renault just said that they had 9 Solicitors waiting for the case and my Solicitor (my dad) said that it would cost about 23000 to take them to court and that we may not win as it has been tried before

Thought I better give you an update. I e-mailed the Customer Relations manager this Morning and told him that I had posted my pics on ClioSport and I had been very concerned that similar things had happened to other Clios, especially when he had told me previously that something like this had never happened before.
I also told him that my Dad has a 182 on order, (due for delivery on 25th June) and that he was so concerned about the incident to my car that he has been to the dealer and told him to put the order on hold until the outcome of mine is sorted.
Just after this e-mail I have Renault phoning me to chase it all of a sudden - THE POWER OF CLIOSPORT.NET!!!!! Rather than me constsantly chasing it with the insurance company and Renault, they are now chasing the insurance company for an outcome and they will update me as soon as they have a result!
I have written to Watchdog, Top Gear, and Which so far and I will have to wait and see what they say. I also had a very interesting e-mail this morning from one of the largest weekday NATIONAL newspapers asking me to forward them the pictures as they may be interested! I told them that I would wait to see Renaults response before deciding what to do.
Some of you kindly posted pics of the other cars which had caught on fire. Are these posted in the gallery or does anyone know where I can get hold of them??

I think Renault should investigate this and issue a safety re-call for all 172/182 owners, they seem to be very good with the re-calls.
But in Renos defence if they dont know of a problem they cant sort it.
A question to all of you that have had this happen, has it only been the clios with the xexon headlight that have caught fire?
Also what side was the fire suspected to have started from?
The reason I ask is that the xexon headlights suffer with water ingress around the xexon bulb starter unit, I have seen a few corroded ones, most of the time the light just dont work.
So if the headlight has water ingress and a permanent live to the light then this would cause a short and possible fire especially if the live feed is not fused.
I think I will check mine out for live feeds with ignition off and If I find any I will fit some inline fuses and take some pics for you all.

WELL DONE MOOSE - had you not done what you have, I would have taken it further, because if Renault arent aware of it (WHICH I VERY MUCH DOUBT!!!!) then they jolly well should be. They probably do not want any publicity about the chance (however remote) of any of their 172/182s catching fire as word spreads very fast and who knows whether their nice little car tucked away safely in the garage isnt going to go up in smoke one of these nights? Perhaps Renault should notify all of their technicians who should recall the cars for wiring checks as a matter of safety.
Moose, maybe if you tell your Renault contact that a national newspaper wants your pictures, that will scare them into moving a bit quicker!!
What was the recent problem with one of the Renault models (was it the new Megane?? - Ive forgotten) where a passenger was able to stop the car with their feet in the footwell, due to the car having been originally for the French market and I suppose to save money and time, they hadnt modified the brake linkage (or whatever it was) and some of the mechanisim was able to be activated by passengers.
CHEAPSKATES!! I dont think Ill get anymore Renaults as my car has not been without irratating problems - hubby saying I told you not to buy a Renault!!
sad to see a car combust like that, but you all need to lay off renault. these things do happen, dunno how many of you lot remember back to the 80s and early 90s with peugeots, they had the habit of spontaneously combusting back then.
watchdog wont be interested. nor will, in the end, the nationals, because its not a new car, and as such the story wont make people buy the publication. watchdog cant see enough cases of it, and although the sensationalist storys there (very valid points about being concerned for families, putting lives at danger etc) theres just not a big enough injustice against the consumer. in relation to some of the stories they have on anyway.
hope you get the matter resolved though, if its the fault of the car and its within warranty (and it can be proven that it was a fault with the car) they should replace it. itd happen with anything else, why not cars.
missy thats rubish ! lay off renault, would you say that if you child was in the car that recently caught fire ? no i dont think so and as we own a 172 in the family we are not prepared to take the risk and have it burn the house down or burn my kids.

xMissy - Things like this happen!!!! We are not in the 80s and 90s now and if we pay £15K for a car I would expect certain things from it. Ok, they may break down or have small faults but when they start catching fire it becomes a little more serious!
Thanks to everyone who has put letters in to Renault and if anybody wants the Customer Services Managers name just let me know.

i think u guys r missing the point missy is making.
she is saying that its not JUST renaults that catch fire, and that all cars can potentially spontaneously combust. so, i dont think that by getting a different car wud solve that problem. ok, two clios that we know of have caught fire on thier own, thats bad, but i mean, look how many clios there are out there and take a % of how many of them catch fire compared with other makes, and im sure ull find that its the same, if not less.
wud prefere to have a 172 sitting below me than a tempromental classic car, as i think that the 172 is alot less accident prone!!!

I totally agree that there will be other cars out there that catch fire but I feel that Renault should be a little more concerned about it. No matter what manufacture makes cars, washing machines, microwaves there will be faults where a fire could be the end result but the manufacture should do everything in their power to make sure it does not happen again.
I agree also that for the millions of Clios that are sold the vast majority of them will run without major problems. Surely, this is even more reason for Renault to look at the individual cases and ask "Why did this happen"? rather than trying to brush it under the carpet
S2 PTH, ya say its only 2! its 2 in this club! there was a cup that did it, i think there was pics further back (cant b arsed to check) how about people who arent in a club or dont kno other people that its happend to! mayb they went to Renault and were fobbed off and told it hadnt happend before! i bet if it does get on watchdog then there will be many more people who have had it happen!

well i hope ure right dan, for mooses sake...and i also agree that renault shud heavily address this problem as it is V. serious.
but, again, like i sed, im not going to worry about my car, if it happens it happens. park it outside if u wish, its got 10years antirust warrenty aint it??
yeah but then insurance goes up because you have it parked outside garage. so why park a car outside when you should have total confidence in it been in a garage ?
and anyway the analagy "if it happens it happens" is no go to us people with children .
if the kid gets killed becuase of the car burning in the garage and in turn burning the childrens room above - does that mean "it happens" ??
no way mate - not prepared to take the risk on this matter - no one bit.
if 99% of the cars are ok and the 1% happens to me it would mean - burnt house and injured children.
i dont care about the house and car been insured etc
I do care about my babies been injured and i for one am not taking that risk.

mate, i understand, and from wot i hear u really do love your kids! but i think u need to chill out a bit on this. oh, and the extra cost of parking the car on the drive wud b minimal to the insurance, coz if uve got kids im guessing ure late 20s at least. try paying close to £1300 (as i am at age 18 for a 2004 1.4) and ud notice it. if u want them to b safe, buy a car with no electrics- but then one like that wont exactly have astounding saftey features!!!
I dont think the insurance is an issue s2 pth.
the issue is you should be able to park you car anywhere on your property without any concern of the car catching fire !
I also pay £1,600 insurance for another high performance car (grp 20) per annum and i can relate to you even at 31 yrs of age regarding premiums but the matter remains, i am not prepared to take the risk and driving a volvo wont solve the matter. maybe a skoda perhaps but no volvo please ! (joke)
i personally love the 172 mk 2 - one of my favourites hence its in my garages and i dont wish to sell it . i just want to make sure its not going to catch fire !
and if renault can check them out then great ! thats the point of this whole issue. im sure there are many who may be concerned as you can see by the viewings on this article.

Anyone know if these 2 or 3 cars that caught fire, started for the same reason?
I know a lad down the street who had a GTT & that just went up in flames, from under the bonnet, half an hour after hed got out of it.
My dads Escort Ghia started smoking from under the bonnet once when he was taking me to look for a car.
Im sure there are a lot of cars that catch fire for no aparent reason.
If this is a common fault then ok its a cause for concern, but there are probably hundreds of thousands of clios out there, & 3 out of that we know of that have set on fire.
There is always a bad apple every now & then, but I wouldnt say there is much cause for concern atm.
2 b honest m8 if ur paying all that money 4 a car u dont expect it 2 endanger urself or ur family other than if u have a crash or r crashed in2,
or unless ur old and 4get 2 put handbrake on and the car rolls and crushes u
but if the car had gone up and sum1 was hurt in the incident it would b all over the papers, just because no1 got hurt it shouldnt b any less serious

Cars do catch fire.My friend had the original RS2000 press car in the RS club and he just went down the road one day and puff it was turned into a crisp.
There must be a certain percentage for all manafacturers that they have cars set alight.172fast,im with you,if your in any doubt take the car out.Your family is way more important.Do you have a double garage(excuse my nose)because i would swap the cars round to try and get that other premium down a bit...lol

same as drink drivers though, get off cos no1 was seriously hurt
I got hit head on by a drink driver, hed been caught drink driving b4, but as i wasnt and nor were my passengers seriously hurt he just got a small fine and another ban, he could have easily killed me if it wasnt 4 my old rover metros incredible build quality
he shoulda been sent down but got off lightly just 2 do it again, just like these cars will go up in flames again, mite only b 1 other car but could end sum1s life

The clio is a very popular car, what is worrying is that of the few hundred to a thousand people who use this website there have been 3 fires.

Still pretty damn unlikely, I think the odds are still in favour of me crashing my car before it catchs fire.
Gutted to hear about these stories of members cars going up in flames - just very relieved to hear no-one was injured. But, its probably a matter of time before someone is. Im a relatively new CS member and this is the first Ive heard of this Clio fault - lets hope it doesnt appear again.
