Clio 172 Handbrake Imbalance

  Clio 172
Hi Everyone,

I am just after putting my Clio 172 MK2 through a NCT(MOT) and it failed due to a handbrake imbalance i am just wondering if anyone has come across a way to fix this?

The rear brakes were perfectly balanced and performing well but the handbrake failed with a 57% imbalance a fail is 50% and a 18% effort a fail is 16%. I am planning on looking into this in the future as they are rubbing a small bit which letting the cable on the handbrake didn't fix.

Anyway any advice is welcome thanks in advance.

Normally this procedure gets most 172/182 handbrake failures through an MOT

Disconnect handbrake cables, remove the rear pads, twist pistons back, clean pads and slides up,refit pads, pump brake pedal up with engine running then reconnect cables and adjust the handbrake cables up.

Done this loads of times.

Few things to cause this issue, firstly, the disks have to be in good condition, especially on the inner surface. if there full of crusty rust, the readings will be less.
Also check operation of each handbrake cable, check they move back & forth freely, they can seize, so one side doesnt pull up, you are just stretching it, when pulling the lever up.

Next would be to check the handbrake side of the caliper, actuate the lever on the caliper with your hand, (caliper removed) & see if the piston is moving back & forth when u move the lever. im sure if you look properly you will find the prob.
